711hotdog Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 Just a quick question. My boyfriend and I are indispute about The Government water we have in our house. He tells me that it is safe to drink and I say it's not. He used to boil it first, but now just drinks it stright from the tap. Thanks. Angie.
churchill Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 Keep a close eye - If he is still OK in 4 weeks - probably safe

PoorSucker Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 According to the authorities it's safe to drink Do I trust them, No... samui-tap-water-deemed-clean-safe-to-drink
sbk Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 I think 711hotdog is located on Koh Phangan. In which case, no, the water is not safe to drink. It is completely untreated and often filled with silt. Course, to drink or not is up to your boyfriend but even the strongest toughest people can get giardia. And it is not pleasant.

Angie, the locals (Thais) drink the well water, not only the deep well, but the normal bore water as well, it's ok for them, as they have a built up resistance. Your boyfriend has probably also built up a resistance to whatever lives in well or government water. Be safe and use filtered water. Just for your info, the large plastic bottled water available from various companies all over Samui, are usually treated using reverse osmosis. This process, apart from removing bacteria and muck etc, it also removes all minerals. As far as I know, these companies do not replace these minerals. As such this water is ok for washing food, making tea/coffee etc, but mineral water purchased separatly is better for drinking, if you want minerals that is.
sbk Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 Government water on Koh Phangan does not come from wells but rather is in large reservoirs. The thing is, anything could crawl in there and die, or whatever and then you'd be drinking that. I, personally, know very few locals that would drink govt water.

I agree but over the years I have become complacent, I don't drink it but make tea, rinse teeth etc and have had no problems so far. However assuming that I have built up some resistance to the various germs I wonder if this resistance is destroyed should I go on a de-tox programme?
Obiwan Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 And don't forget all those pesticides from the farming in the mountains.. and people swimming upstream of the water resevoir Happy Drinking!
Etherus Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 'For your information my boy friend has just come back from a 3rd time in Irak'anyone know where irak is? Next door to Tie Rack. I wondered about Afgan as well. I think that must be near to Tin Can which would suggest her boyfriend has done five tours in Tin Can Tie Rack.
Jose Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 I wondered about Afgan as well. Care to tell us about your Afghan experience sometime, Etherus? Do they have any problems with Gov water there?

Care to tell us about your Afghan experience sometime, Etherus? Do they have any problems with Gov water there? What can I say Jose? Anyone who thinks KP has problems should spend a weekend in downtown Kabul or Kandahar. The water is bad, the food is bad, the accommodation is bad and on top of that, people are trying to blow you up or shoot you because they don't want you to be there. KP is paradise by comparison.
Mark Wolfe Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 Safe as in the opposite of unsafe? What is the worst that could happen drinking the water? Koh Samui's revenge? A plug in the pipes? Or are we seriously talking about hepatitis and cholera?
eyalnow Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 I lately started to boil tap water, and it tastes much better than RO water. But the best thing is to buy a big plastic pile and collect rain water. it tastes better than any mineral water I drank. if you're into a bit of alternative medicine, put your water in glass bottles and leave them in the sun for a day. the problem with mineral water bottles is the plastic bottles - more unnecessary pollution. I recommend people/hotels/businesses to stop selling plastic bottles altogether and either use glass bottles or put a pitcher of water, like small thai restaurants do happy new year !

pammy123 Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 No way the water is often light brown in colour
happylarry Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 hi eyalnow....I think you are wrong about the plastic bottles. Thailand must be one of the only countries in the world where you will never get a polution problem from plastic bottles, have you never seen the locals searching all the waste bins etc for any type of plastic and cardboard to earn a few baht from. HL

RO water? Runoff? Rank Offal? I'm not sure how the tourists are supposed to catch rain water to drink, although I'd be the first there with my camera... Alternate medicine vis a vis water in glass bottles in the sun? Wow, I'm feeling a crystal coming on...why not just put the water under a pyramid make from used bottle rocket sticks? Why not buy a big plastic water bottle that is refilled when it is empty (you "keep" the bottle)? It's hugely cheaper than buying water in the shops and you don't throw away the plastic bottle? (Although admittedly, this is not a tourist solution, unless you are staying for some time.)
eyalnow Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Tourists can buy 6 litter bottles and refill smaller bottles residents can buy reverse osmosis (RO) water and refill smaller bottles, or collect rain water. some say that the RO water have no minerals in them, and they do taste a bit flat. another solution is to buy a water filter. it's better to Reduce and ReUse than to Recycle, which takes so much more energy. thank you for your suggestion, From now on, I'm gonna put a glass water bottle on a crystal under a pyramid made of used plastic bottles...
