Getting More Out Of Your Memory

Featured Replies

Hi All

I'm running low on my memory space. I use cc cleaner defrag the rest but not enough space on my memory left. I sure if i do it all again but first turning off my system restore "where alot of files I'm deleting are kept for back up" Will get me alot more space is that a good idea or bad move? or any other ideas would be apreciated.

Cheers in advance..

What you are doing ccleaner/defrag etc affects the space on the disk, not the memory.

You need to look at the number of programmes that get started when you boot the machine

and stop some of them.

This will free up memory.

With XP you can look at how much memory is in use by pressing Control+Alt+Delete.

That is all three buttons at the same time.

Select Task Manager

Processes will show you what is running - a little confusing as many are OS processes

Performance will show you how much memory you have and how much is in use.

Particularly check that the amount of memory the OS sees is the same as you think you have installed!!

You may have a faulty memory bank and that could be the cause of your problems.

Clear temporary internet files will probably free up a large amount of HDD space if you have not done this before. But do you really mean HDD or RAM memory? Clearing RAM: best to reduce the amount of installed programs that load at start-up, antivirus stuff, any IM programs etc.

However, computers attempt to run as quickly as possible (see computer options for setting performance vs 'look nice' effects) so pre-load some applications (when installed there is often an option "run at startup") - the application is loaded and sitting in RAM memory ready to be used.

If you are seeking more 'memory' because you feel the computer is slow, you might be best advised to find out about swap files and HDD performance.

Adding more physical RAM memory might also assist you.

--------------------------edit---------------------------

"....antivirus stuff,...." I used this as an example - I feel you probably require such active protection - but this is an example of an appliaction that is loading and probably running in the background while you are intent on doing other stuff.

If you seek extra memory for extra speed - ensure that the speed issues are system related not ISP connection related.

He means HD space...

Turning off system restore might recover some, I remember though if you right click on your hard drive there is an option to recover space by deleting temporary files which should help.

After that, hunt for large files you might have left lying around. How old is your system?

How big is your hard drive? How much free space do you have?

If you do not have much free space your system is likely a lot slower than it should be as your paging file is probably heavily fragmented. Depending on how large your drive is, it might be worth it to purchase a larger drive, which will also be faster. You can purchase a new 320GB hard drive for ~1,600 baht.

it might be worth it to purchase a larger drive

Yes, above is way to go, just buy a bigger HD and clone your old one on to it.
