monkeytunes Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 I currently have a fortuner, its been a fabulous motor but its nearly 3.5 years old so have been thinking about changing it. I went to have a look at the new fortuner and although theres only a few changes (from what I could see) I did liked it, but with the amount fortuners on the road I thought It would be worth a look around, After looking at the Isuzu MU7 platinum , I was quite impressed, although there not as attractive as the fortuner, on the suface they come well equipped with gadjets, and the price I thought was quite reasonable, So I just wanted to get a few more details, before I make a decision to test drive one, is there anyone out there that could do a quick top gear style review? the pluses minuses, fuels consumption etc, you feedabck would be very much appreciated. Thanks MT
Toany Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 Been driving a standard MU7 for 2 years now and just completed 60,000 K. Fuel consumption on Automatic 2 wheel drive and sticking to speed limits is 14.7 K/L. Even if you drive faster it is still unlikely to be below 12. Remember the Automatic is thirstier than the manual. Very reliable and cheap to service, they give you the labour for the first 50,000 K of service. I have been pleased with mine and it is a lot bigger inside if you need to carry stuff. Only downside I have found is no footwell for the third row of seats, but then the fortuner has less leg room and you have to move seats forward to get people in all the seats. At least I could get a test drive in an MU7, Toyota would not give me one.

Manual 4x4 and it only gets 12 km/l (but I drive on mountain roads almost all the time). Been very happy with it and the service from Isuzu.
angiud Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 I have MU7 Gold 4x4 manual since july and I am very satisfied . Low consumption 13/14km/lt, very good interiors and space, big leg room, very nice interiors. I don't like only the not enough viev in reverse (I guess the reason because they put a rear camera!). I have tried several time a Fortuner from a friend of mine (thumb down).
monkeytunes Posted December 23, 2008 Author Posted December 23, 2008 Thanks for all the replies, the saleman said it was quite reasonable on fuel and from what youve said it seems to be the case, much better than the fortuner from what Im told, a couple of other things how have you found things like acceleration/overall speed, suspension and brakes? thanks again MT.

I have just been to Chiang Mai and Payao with 8 people on board and going up and down the mountains to various remote temples and even with only 2 wd it managed all the off road. The ride was comfortable whatever the terrain. Up the mountains near Chiang Mai I could overtake anything going up hill. The 3 litre Turbo gives you all the excelleration you will need. It is quite happy to cruise at anywhere from 90 to 120, I have not tried it above that speen for any distance. But at 120 you are likely to be frequently stopped by the police anyway. The turbo kicks in abouve 105. I have always managed to stop before hitting something, so I think the brakes are good. If you buy the MU7 I would be interested to hear your coments as you will be able to compare the two vehicles. Most people, like me, have only used either the Fortuner or MU7.

Toany Posted December 25, 2008 Posted December 25, 2008 You guys getting 12km/L + from an auto must be driving with feathers for feet ! Just sticking to the speed limits, which you can do when you are retired. Obviously not much driving in Bangkok, but I obtained 14.7km/L over a few thousand Kms on my 2 wheel drive auto.
