A close friend of mine had a break in 2 months ago. lap top along with cell phone and a very precious camera were stolen.

the biggest loss was that his all his photos of many years were stored on the laptop..which he never backed up.

he later found out that in this area of mainam there were a lot of break and many houses were hit.

yesterday he gets a call at about 9 pm asking to come to the police station.

at the police station an investigator with good English (surprising ahhh)explained that the police had aprehanded the thief and that a search in his house were found numerous items .

they put up a big display of all the items and asked amy friend if he can go through the items and idetify his stolen items.

the laptop and the camera were imiditely identified. having turned on the laptop all his pictures were still there..

well for him the police were a real Xmas surprise.

he filled in a report and was asked to come back in 2 days aftyer they log it as evidence to get his stuff back.

there have been many posts on TV complainig about the police here in samui this time they did good...

The boys in brown aren't that bad after all, know a few of them over the years, what does one expect?

They aren't really supposed "to do" anything, show face, hang around and if there is a feud, break in, whatever where police presence is required they'll be there to file the report....or calm a fight down...on my behalf I am quite happy that they aren't around, hiding in the bushes with radar guns, writing tickets where ever, whenever, however, whatever and yes they will only be as good as required by their superiors!

Do you know which police station he had to go, HD ?

We had a burglary in Bang Po area 2 years ago and had to go to the Police Station in Nathon...long shot but could have been the same guy.

I got the impression that whenever it is serious, like a break-in, physical abuse or similar, it´s the Nathon station that is handleling it. When i was managing a resort 2 years ago, we had a few happenings. One break in and one case of a Thaiwoman that went crazy on her bf with knives and stuff. In both cases i called the number i had for Chaweng police, but in both cases we ended up waiting for the Nathon division to arrive.

Don´t know if it´s always like this but got that impression myself.

All of this seems quite true. I just wish the police would enforce the n-smoking laws here. As far as I know, they

are respoonsible for this in all of Thailand. Why not here? Many people in Samui seem to appreciate the utter lack of law

enforcement, and competent policing. I suppose I like some aspects of that too. But, for a non-smoker who has

an allergy to tobacco smoke it would sure be nice if at least a small percentage of restaurants and bars here

enforced the law. It is the Thai law after all. I am not bringing my personal preferences to this land, and harping

on people not observing my preferences. I am only saying that it would be nice to see the law occasionally enforced,

especially when it comes to something as fabulously heinous as people blowing smoke in your face while you are

trying to enjoy your meal. I consider smoking to be the embodiment of a lack of personal discipline, and also

an extreme display of a lack of self esteem. Sabotaging the body like that could result from no other deep seated

emotion than wanting to, or being willing to destroy one's body, and a willingness to create so much pollution of

filth around them. Of course it is a habit I have no understanding of. And I am not being critical of people who

choose to smoke. I am only saying that it is not too much to ask that smokers show a very modest sense of

discipline when they are eating in a restaurant. I do not think that is too much to ask.

figured I'd put my input on the matter, how much can you really expect police to do when they make so little. Most people here make more money working at hotels then being a police officer. A waiter with salary and service charge makes more money than a police officer, until corruption goes down and real wages are paid what can you really expect. I'd say in a better scenario

At last a crime is investigated and solved. Perhaps now all the other thousands of cases will be looked into

I've just remembered about a burglary next door to me about six months ago. My landlord decided to report this to the police and in due course they turned up. Well, i've never see two policemen looking so bored, not even making an attempt to look interested. Guess what....that was the last ever seen or heard of the incident. The funny/sad thing is that you just knew they would not do a thing. Of the twenty or thirty people i know that have been burgled here and have wasted the gasoline to report it, nothing has ever been done about it.

I am delighted that highdiver had good fortune. Must have felt like winning lotto!

The statistics don't look as aweful as they are because many of us that have lived here for a few years, rightly or wrongly, don't bother to report a break in, because they know that it's a complete waste of time.

Virtually word for word the same thing happened to me about 4 Years ago when i was living in Hua Thanon..

They actually brang the Thief to my House & made me Dop Salop him on the Head, i kid you not, & they had the Laptop with them at the same time..

Someone broke into the house and stole quite a large quantity of foreign currency that had stupidly been left lying around. Anyway, the police showed up and took some notes, the indifference in their attitude palpable. However, their eyes lit up when they spotted some porn movies next to the TV and they asked if they could have them. Not wanting any problems I said sure and they went off into the night looking pretty chuffed.

Never heard about the money again but two weeks' later I came back home to find they'd returned the movies. Nice one boys.

To: Mark Wolfe: 30,000! What sort of employment here in Samui pays that? I can only assume you don't work in the tourism industry here. As I in contacts with many hotels of and my wife's a local here who owns a hotel we have many people we talk with on ideas. I can give you some idea but this depends mostly on size of hotel and if its 3 to 5 star, plus what the owners are willing to pay. Mind you you also have to provide housing, insurance, service charge, uniforms and meal to.

Second-hand smoke, cigarette buts and broken beer bottles all over the beach, needles, etc - these are all waste products from someone's personal pleasure, someone who couldn't care much about their own health, and care even less about others'.

Urine is also a waste product from drinking alcohol. Imagine if it also was spread around like tobacco smoke, because drinkers couldn't care less. Hey, waittaminute - I think I've just described the FMP scene...

mortality rate per capita, in all of Thailand, including Bangkok! The roads are atrocious, and the laws are not enforced, except

when the useless police need money for a vacation villa, or a beer party. If the license laws were enforced, and the 10 year olds

were kept off the road, like they are in many other places, it might save a few lives. Of course, if I allowed myself to be very

cynical, I could be talked into believing that the money that the local hospitals generate are enough for the politicians in

Bangkok to encourage the lack of road policing.

Lawenforcement does not necessarily prevent accident due through

drink-driving irresponsible action and horrific road conditions, as well

as safety measures for road constructions sites!

I would love to see more responsible behavoir and self awareness within the

tourist community and take care, good care of themselves!

Seems for some that immediately after they leave their accommodation after arrival,

the leave every common sense in the safety locker as well!

take good care, fully aware of the traffic situation and absolutely NO drink driving!

Just make "a round through town" after hours... and you will witness how silly

some of the tourist behave, very, very silly!

It's not "them" it's always "me" first - I am RESPONSIBLE for my deeds,

behavior and mistakes - NO ONE ELSE!

It's not only on the roads, watch some going around on the Jetskies, behaving

in public, foul language while drunk...ever saw a Thai right there in the middle

of it all doing his "business" - relieving himself, standing up, in full posture,

as if there wasn't anyone around?
