Tripod & Lycos Free Web Sites

Featured Replies

I have a Tripod account and a web site that i have been using to update the folks back home and share the pictures with friends here.

The trouble is that for about the last month, I have been unable to view the web site here and neither can anyone else who has tried.

People back home in the US & UK can see it no problem.

What appears to have happened is that the Thai government has blocked thai access to Tripod & Lycos member web sites!

This was confirmed by Tripod technical support yesterday. They do not know why this is the case and merely suggest I contact the ISPs.

I have sent a few emails to the various ones around but I dont think I will hold my breath for a sensible reply.

I think they do the same for Geocities sites. Some ISPs in Thailand seem to block them, others are OK..

Free websites like Tripod, Angelfire, and Geocities tend to get alot of "temporary" porn sites hosted on them. They can stay up for days before getting shutdown. They are mainly used as redirect pages to more permanent sites, the free website URL is the one that gets spammed to newsgroups, email, irc, etc. Sooner or later someone complains and the freebie site gets shut down, taking the fall for the permanent site whose host mearly states that their client never spammed thier domain so no action will be taken.

Because of this, free sites get a high volume of porn spam, and this has not escaped the eyes of Thai authorities.

Angelfire used to make new sites wait for 24hrs before they were viewable, to deal with this problem, but when they became part of Lycos this stopped. :o

I'd try to use one of the less common free sites:

http://spaceports.com/

I've had good luck with that one a few years ago.

You may need to get someone with a bit of knowlage to ftp the content off your old site and upload it to your new one for you since I imagine they blocked all ports to tripod, but its worth a try to ftp to it in case its just the web that's blocked.

Good luck

Well, that explains alot, thanks. I used to use Tripod but found I couldn't access it anymore. I have moved to Bravenet's free hosting. It is ftp but that is fine.

Had a look at spaceports and they are no longer free. But since its not a commercial site and the 98% of people who look at it are in places where they can see it, I probably will just keep on with Tripod.
