I believe there is a free trade agreement between Thailand and Australia, can any one tell me how it works if I want to import a bike into Thailand? I was told you only pay the freight. :o

No you will have to pay import duties and it is 200 procent of what THEY value the bike at not you own value. Go to the motor forum in this website and start reading and you will find out that it is not economical viable to to bring any vehicle/motorbike in to Thailand.

As above mate. try a search on importing a bike. An expensive and time consuming ordeal. Unless it is a unique bike or of great sentimental value then the opinion is to sell it there and buy here. :o

As above.

Note that we had a thread quite awhile ago, with links to the website that showed how the tariffs and duties were calculated.

Basically, you have to take the value of the vehicle, add the freight/shipping costs to get it to Thailand and add the cost of the insurance to get the "base value"

(for example, a $30,000 vehicle that cost $8,000 to ship to Thailand, and the insurance cost was $2,000 would give you a base value of $40,000 for the vehicle).

That "base value" is then multiplied by various percentages, depending on age of the vehicle and so on, to get the cost of the duties/taxes/tariffs.

When I used the formula to try and estimate the cost of importing a 5 year old Chevy pick-up a couple years ago, the taxes/duties were almost double the value of the vehicle !

While that was a couple years ago, I haven't heard of any changes. I'm sure if there had been significant changes, we'd have heard about it as there would be a flood of vehicles suddenly being imported (and sold) at substantially cheaper prices than currently available !
