if you are using this drive I suggest you head over to the seagate users forum and have a read about this issue

http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/messag...ding&page=1

The issue lies with faulty microcode in firmware version SD15, found on drives manufactured in Thailand. Generally, the drive will operate normally until the time of failure and at some point will lock up and prevent detection by the BIOS, rendering it completely unusable.

Thanks for the heads up. I ordered one a few weeks ago and had to claim it. Tried it in three computers and it took the BIOS several minutes to recognize it and the heads constantly cycled. That one was marked as "China". Got the replacement and it is marked as "Thailand" and worked fine. Will probably order a WD 1TB drive since I no longer trust this one and use it as backup only. A student at the office also has the same problem as my first one.

According to Seagate in Samut Prakarn, in front of the Moban I live, Seagate didn't manufacturing or assembling any Hard disk in Thailand since they was closing the Rangsit Factory. And that was last week Tuesday as I was by them to check some drives! Here the producing the Reading Heads only.

So, I'm wonder what HDD that are Made in Thailand from Seagate?!

Cheers.

As has been said on the Seagate forums and other forums, the disk is marked with a code identifying it as Thailand. The label on my first drive was China and the replacement drive Thailand. They appear to have a plant in Teparuk and in Korat where the latter plant assembles full drives.

I remember in the 90ties there were a lot of "genuine" Intel processors available - bearing the "original" Intel logo.

It took not so long to find out it was "made in China crap" and the logo was simply printed on.

Its only a thought I have because I can confirm this <quote:> Here the producing the Reading Heads only. <unquote>

This information above comes from the Seagate website and from Seagate support.

It's probably academic anyway in that the issue appears with Firmware (SD15) which would probably be the same from any of the manufacturing plants.

An example failed 7200.11 unit (1TB not only ones effected).

Problem: 0 GB in BIOS & not detected. 2 months of life.

Country: Spain

S/N: 9QM613FN

ST3500320AS Barracuda 7200.11 500Gbytes

P/N: 9BX154-303

Firmware: SD15

Date Code: 09083

Site Code: KRATSG

Product of Thailand

WUXISG Site Code is China

The Theparak Plant (Teparuk as Tywais wrote) is the one in Samut Parkarn in front of my moban!! I can only repeat what the Engineer from Seagate, a Singaporean, told me: Seagate didn't produce drives anymore in Thailand. Maybe they doing some "repairing" or assembling?! I had to go quite often there for to check drives and even recover data and they quite helpfull.

Cheers.

The Teparuk plant only does a small part of the production and not full assemblies. Again, dozens of sites and hundreds of users are reporting this problem in the last few days. And again they are emphasizing their drives (majority) show the Site Code: KRATSG Product of Thailand (Korat) assembly plant which I believe was the previous Maxtor plant before being taken over by Seagate.

Seagate Thailand

The problem is being reported from countries all over the world so not a localized issue.

The Theparak Plant is producing and assembling the Reading Heads.

We using only SCSI drives from Seagate for some time now because of the problems we had in the past with IDE and even SATA drives from them. And SCSI drives was not manufactured in Thailand.

I went to the Seagate site (link from you) and had seen that the display the Korat Factory and wrote that some drive produced there. That isn't the same as the engineer from Seagate was telling me!

I also saw the address of the Theparak Plant and think that those address is wrong!!

The Seagate Plant Theparak is located: Moo 5, Theparak Road km.4.5, Thambol Bang Muang, Amphur Muan Samut Parkarn 10270!

I live at the same Area, in the same Thambol and the same Road, just 150 m inside since 1990 and I do believe that I should know our address very well which is also printed from the Government on our company registration documents and many more. The change to the next Moo, Moo7 is about 100 m away after passing a Klong which is the "border" between that two Moo's! That is an explanation we was getting from the Samut Prakarn Revenue Department and should be therefore correct.

Anyway, we do not use IDE and SATA drives from Seagate for some time now because of the problems we had in the past. Even the WD drives are better with less problems! But that's OUR experiences.

Cheers.

<sigh> My 1TB SATA II Seagate drive package that I received 2 weeks ago. Again, the site code shows KRATSG, which is Korat assembly plant.

Tywais, I don't deny that!

Just curios that an Seagate Engineer told just last week that Seagate didn't produce drives anymore in Thailand! And that was for to ask the to repair an drive which was made a few years ago in Thailand!

Cheers.
