Both have proved utterly unscrupulous when it come to money. As with everywhere, find someone that really knows vehicles to inspect it. Recall on another thread some company that will come and do an inspection for you.

We bought our car on finance (Due to be paid of in a few months )

The finance company insisted on sending one of their own people to check it out themselves, after all they'd want to check it's real value should we default on payments. Of course they gave it the all clear and we have not had a single problem with it.

On another occasion I rented a car in Pattaya, this car was also for sale. Whilst driving this car we got a flat tyre and so we had to pull over, a kindly copper happened upon us and offered us help.

Whilst helping us he noticed upon something which he pointed out to us with his torch (It was dark). He showed us how severely distorted the roof of the car was, and that the chassis not symmetrical.

Clearly this car had previously been in a serious accident and was both illegal and very dangerous. The copper, after helping us to replace the flat, escorted us back to the rental place where we received our full deposit back, and we left with the policeman in heated discussion with the owner.

We never did see that rental company again, although a week or two later another sprang up in it's place. Coincidentally the new company had a fleet very similar to the previous one.

I don't know about whether or not it is best to purchase from Thai or Farang, but surely the moral of the story is:

If you don't know what to check for yourself, then find somebody who does.

Camry 2 years old and City 4 years old

No problem (but I am mechanical engineer (at least I hold the diploma;nearly forgot everything ))

On the other hand the guy who bought my Vios (my only new car bought here) was not very happy.But he didn't open his eyes before buying it;The little scratches were not hidden

Check it out properly yourself rather than listening to the sales guy.

If you don't and you manage to get a lemon, you only have yourself to blame, not the seller, be he Thai or farang.

Never bought a car from some dodgy 'Farang' second hand car salesman before?

I feel that both Thai and Farang would rip you off if given half a chance.

Get it checked, though, some things you cannot look at (grumbles here abt gearbox, but thanks Stingray oodles for his info on that).

I understand this used car lot has some very good cars and is backed by a very reputable farang dealer who backs up every car he sells. I've forgotten the exact location, but I do remember their phone number is "BR-549" and the name was "Sample Sales".

Farang owned cars are usually better serviced and maintained BUT they ask for silly prices when selling them Thai owned cars are usually poorly serviced or not serviced at all BUT they ask a fairer price!! I would by off a Thai then put a little money servicing the thing... just my opinion through

Here here. Some old sayings "Caveat emptor" and "buy the seller not the car". I have seen shady slimy falangs too. I think you can get burned by both Thais and Falangs, so have a professional check it out before you buy. I would have no problem buying from a Thai (well that might also be because I am Thai...hehehe). I would stay away from used car dealers, and buy from private parties. But for both Thai and falang I would look for someone that I could trust. Stable job, doesn't need the money (wants to upgrade car, or doesn't need the car) so won't screw you. I hear alot of grumbling that the Thais don't take care of their cars. I think it depends on the car and the person. If it's someone with education, and decent job, they will take care of their cars. As you know, cars here are not cheap, and people who can afford a car try to take pride in them. All of my family (uncles and aunts) really do maintain their cars and they are spotless 95% of the time. I mean the cost of labor is so cheap, that people that can afford it, will maintain their cars. If you're buying a 30 year old Toyota from a farm hand, you might get problems there.

Yes, I would. Have a good buddy that just did, just use common sense and check it out and a buddy with knowledge of use car to do like wise than hassle on the price.

I live quite close to Harry Redknapp, he doesn't sell cars so I don't understand your comment.

It shouldn't matter who you buy your car from, your buying a car not a persons friendship or reputation, just have a good look at the car is all that matters. Who cares about its former owner?
