Hi great site,

I have being browsing over this site for a while and in the past year it has helped me obtain 2 tourist visas for my fiancee to Ireland, thanks to everyone for their solid advice.

I am Irish born and currently living in Ireland my Fiancee is Laos and she is presently staying with me on her second tourist visa and all is going great thankfully.

We are intending to marry in Thailand in 7 weeks and I have a few questions for the members hopefully yee might be able to give some advice.

Firstly the Irish embassy we dealt with for the tourist visas is based in Hanoi Vietnam and they have been super helpful and polite in all our dealings with them. Can we do the paper work through this embassy or will we have to use the Irish consulate based in Malaysia which deals with Thailand.

Second question is can my Fiancee get her papers in Bangkok at the Laos embassy or will she have to go to Laos for this process and does anyone know how long the papers take for both the Irish Embassy and Laos Embassy.

Is the process of marrying in Thailand fairly straight forward as we have checked into it for Laos and it is rather expensive and complicated.

Last question finally, after we marry I will have to return to Ireland as I am employed here and the eventual plan is to take my Fiancee(then wife) back here,is the spouse visa very hard to onbtain and what time frame would we be looking at.

If anyone has had a similar experience or can offer any advice it would be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot

Getting married in Thailand is straight forward and free. It doesn't take much time and you can do it at any amphur (or khet in BKK). What is costly is to get all the documents from both your embassies, have them translated to Thai and legalised.

Your future wife will have to use the services of the Laos embassy in BKK. Not sure which one you will have to use, better contact mentioned embassy. Legalisation by the Thai foreign ministry is done by comparing the signatures on the documents to a list they keep of signatures from embassy officials. So it is important to get the document from the right embassy/consulate, otherwise they can't be legalised.

When you get married you will get a marriage certificate. Also ask for the khor ror 2 document. This gives the details about you and your wife and is necesarry to register the marriage in your own country. Don't let them forget the nice red stamps!

Good luck and congratulations.

My g/f and I hope to do a cheap and cheerful marriage later this year. So we go to registry office in Bangkok? Do we need witnesses? If anybody has gone down this route I'd appreciate their story.

Thank you.

It would depend on both your nationality, as you will need certain documentation from your own country to be able toi get married in Thailand. Once you have that the marriage is straight forward and free of charge, except for 10 or 20 baht for a copy of the marriage registar, which you will need to register the marriage in your own country.

Speaking of getting married in thailand. I've been doing a lot of thinking a couple of days ago about it. But I want to give you my background first. I am a 48 years old Filipino, living in thailand for 20 years. Anyway, I've been separated from my wife (filipina) for 18 years. We have children.

I've been living with a thai woman for 16 years now. My children were also close to her and the woman whom i married don't bother anymore because we were separated before i met this woman.

I've been contemplating to get married with her. We've been calling each other 'husband and wife' and of course, dreaming of someday, things will be legal.

Divorce is not acceptable in our country. So getting the right paper from the embassy will not work out for sure since i'm still married.

Do they have any exceptions to the rule here in Thailand? Or do you know of any ways to do it?

Thanks a lot.
