Speaking Of Klong Toey

Featured Replies

It's about the only part of Bangkok I've never been in...at least not in the heart of it. Is it dangerous? What's it like to walk around?

Do a simple search of the TV forum. This topic has been addressed before.

Soi Ngam Dupli is one of those things you gotta see once..its the old budget accomodation area, since superceded by the likes of Khao San etc... has some history.

There is a nice Italian restaurant there(well I had a good Rissotto anyway) and an old hole in the wall bar called Wong's (still open ?)

Many dodgy characters are reported to live in this area. A bunch of hotels (Malaysia Hotel) and an Issan bar/eatery from memory. It's been a while.

You can go via Rama 4 or do a walk up from Naratiwat Rd, via Soi Suan Plu for some interesting back street life.

That Soi has many Vietnam war-ear short term hotels, if you're interested in that. I had lunch at the new ibis hotel there, and was pleasantly surprised.

Interesting. I was always told to avoid Klong Toey that it was so terribly unsafe. Guess that was exaggerated. I'll have to explore when I get over there soon.

Soi Ngam Dupli, the Malaysia Hotel and Wongs are not in Klong Toey. They are in Satorn. The MRT station called Klong Toey isn't really in Klong Toey either. To get to Klong Toey get off at the Klong Toey MRT and go east on Rama IV and then turn right on Thanon Kasem Rat, keep going toward the Chao Phraya river until you get to Wat Klong Toey Nai and the old Port of Khlong Toey. Along the way you will go through the slums. Much worse than anything around the old Malaysia Hotel.

but The Emporium is in Khlong Toei :o

(as is apparently ---- NEP --- Nana)

If you stay out of the slum areas near the Port Authority (Customs) then there is generally not a safety problem anymore than there would be in any other area. You walk around after 1am, drunk with your 10Baht chain on and you are likely to meet some new friends. Soi 22 to 24 (The Emporium) is also Khlong Toei as well, right to the port so there is a lot of area. I live 5mins walk to the market, have never felt unsafe.

Oz

I live on Soi 26 and I walked home filthy drunk one night and didn't have a single problem. There are few Irish and Japaness pubs and karaokes around.

where exactly is the district boundary line ? ...soi ngam dupli/soi bamphen is near by khlong toei market and yannawa district is also nipping at the heels. I always thought these sois were zoned in khlong toei district.

I can see from this map :

that soi ngam dupli and soi bamphen are right at the junction of 3 districts , sathon, yannawa and khlong toei....bangkoks golden triangle :o

but you are correct that it is actually addressed in Sathon.....but for practical purposes i think ngam dupli and bamphen are close enough and well known enough to be included in the OPs walkabout of Klong Toei :D

As you know Bangkok is divided up into political districts know as "ket" เขต. The Soi Ngam Dupli and Emporium areas may indeed be within the borders of Ket Khlong Toey but to the average Bangkokian Khlong Toey refers to the area around the Khlong Toey Green Market down to the Klong Toey Wats, the old Port of Khlong Toey and the boat pier to Phra Phradaeng. This area is mostly slums. It is not particularly dangerous in the daytime but like anywhere where you find desperately poor people and high drug and alcohol abuse one should be on their guard during hours of darkness.

Rubbish Reply..You or anyone does not have to "join" to view the pics, unless you believe that the Thai map is a "pic"

The only things you cannot see if you don't log in is the co-ordinates and the Thai map.

Here's how.. Look in the Top Right Hand Corner of the page

See the Option view gallery, move your cursor underneath, then click the LH button of your mouse OK !

The whole thing is FREE unless you want to filter 1000's of caches in your

country, not an issue here.
