astral
I have a Dreambox 7020Si satellite receiver, running Linux. It is wonderful. Connects to my home LAN so files can be transfered to and from the box and patches can be downloaded directly off the internet using the remote. It records programmes on an internal hard disk. I have a 160Gb installed at present. The Movie Player allows me to access and stream video from my PC for viewing on the TV. A whole new home entertainment experience. Anyone else using this technology? Drop me a PM or post here.
sas_cars
I am using a dreambox 500s, the model is more popular here in Thailand and cheaper too, 3900 THB. Great piece of hardware and software. Opens up whole new possibilities of satellite viewing since it supports card sharing as well.

joncl
Anyone else using this technology? Drop me a PM or post here. I am one of the developers of the software that runs on enigma platform from the software team called PLi and their wiki writer. I use all the DM models here in Bangkok, although the new DM100 which replaces the now defunct DM500 is not linux based. Cheers Jon
astral
Good to hear from you Jon. After checking out the various images I ended up with Pli Jade as the best of the bunch. It seemed to give me the best support for the internal card slots, the timer and several other areas. Thanks for all the work you and other developers have put in. LivinLOS
No discussion of card sharing in the public forum please. Personal card sharing should be no more contentious a post than using any other form of splitters.. I personally cardshare my ubc card on my home net. Its when the cardsharing involves sharing card access info with multiple users.
LivinLOS
For a real home media net experience.. The dreambox can now be used as a tuner win vista media center providing a full epg, recording, pvr / dvr, etc etc etc.. Also of note is it will stream the feed out via MCE extenders like the xbox to bedroom nodes from a central server etc.. Check out DVBSBridge.. Also of note is it will stream the feed out via MCE extenders like the xbox to bedroom nodes from a central server etc.. Check out DVBSBridge.. Not that a vista product is related to this Linux sub forum So as some of the PLi team had personal contact with Pavlo who developed this and after reading your note I decided to try it here on one of the Vista boxes. I must say I was excited after reading your post and expected to see something more than what I use now (PC to LCD TV and the DM's multi-webifs - 6 boxes on one screen) In outcome in short for me was, what a disappointment DVBSBridge turned out to be. I know it is still under development but when you have over 260 channels in your active bouquet list on your DM box box (in this case I tested it on a 7020 running Jade2 with over 400 active channels via a multiswitch) DVBSBridge simply ignores all the other channels once it reaches its 260 channel limit. You can not select what channels will be added to it, and after 20 minutes (not the 5 minutes MCE says) you are left with less functionality than what the normal E1 & E2 webif's provides. So even though I asked for a free copy - tounge in cheek - on the PLi-images site, forget it, as I will stick to Linux, the E1 & E2 DM Webif and VLC and Mplayer as it delivers so much bang for your buck. LivinLOS
I have no where near that channel amount.. Only using UBC currently as I moved into a house with fixed dish setup. For me its a case of being the best solution to get the TV feed into a unified media interface that I have, otherwise its back to UBC out to Grab cards in. I am considering attempting to play around with the XBMC on a linux build but have the media net side set up where the GF is familiar with it.. That right there is a 'fixed user base' thats highly resistant to interface upgrades Edited April 24, 2009 by LivinLOS

Check satthai.tv or eldsat.comTrueVisions/UBC card works straight away in the Dreambox with the latest PLi firmware (nicest software for the Dreambox if you ask me). @Prasert, Thank you! Have to admit that I am a total n00b when it comes to Linux and sat boxes. What i want to do is make a sort of media box where I can record from TRUEvisions/UBC and hopefully also collect my MP3 files. Keep everything in one place and not have to worry about the PC when I want to record a TV program or play an MP3 file. I have been looking at the specs for a DM 600 PVR and it should be able to at least record the tv. However, I can't see any mention of MP3 support in the spec list. Surely, that is possible though? Further, it seems to only support IDE HD's. seems a pity to go with an old interface. Has anyone done anything similar or have any tips? Thanks //t

Prasert
Even the DM500 can be used as a PVR. Since it has no harddisk, it requires a network share where it can store the data. 'Mounting' this share can be done through the menu on the television, or through the web-interface of the dreambox. (well okay, one does have to understand a bit about computers to create a share on a computer, but then again, that's not rocket science....) Selecting something to record is even easier - in the webinterface you select the EPG list. Find the program you want to record, click on the clock displayed next to the description and voila, the program will be recorded. Note: since there is only 1 tuner in the box, you cannot watch another channel at the same time. To playback a recording, select the file menu, go to the 'movie' directory on the share and select the recording. If you're considering a PVR - forget about the expensive box from Truevisions and get a Dreambox. Although running on Linux, the user interface only requires you to push buttons on the remote! Thanks, I was a bit overwhelmed reading the WIKI from joncl (thanks) and I don't think I want to go too deep into the whole LINUX thing. I'd much prefer a PnP solution. At least at this point in time. As to that is it possible to use the DM600 to record ALL instances of a TV series just by choosing an option from the menu? Thanks //t

lor
It is not possible to select an option to record all episodes of a series, however you can set the timer to record at the same time and day every week. As long as they do not move the broadcast time this will get the whole series. Noticed that there is now a Jade 3 available on the Pli site. joncl
PLi® releases OpenPli to the worlds developers AUGUST 13th 2009: PLi® announced today that it has made its world renowned PLi® software for the DreamBox set top boxes available under a GPL License. Another first from the Dutch development team and for us the end users. PLi® headed by Peter Lindeman and a team of developers based in Holland, Belguim and the USA, started to develop the PLi® software in 2004 when he took over the development reigns from Ronaldd who retired from development scene the same year. Peter has now build a team spanning the globe with alpha and beta testers in Canada, Europe, Mexico, New Zealand, South Pacific Islands, Thailand, and the USA and now you too can join in with OpenPli. The team did also pointed out that all development is done on a "love for the hobby" model and all have full time jobs. One of the senior PLi® developers said "When I started with dreambox development, one of the main hurdles was the big difference between tuxbox-cvs and the more advanced closed images. Opening the PLi repository will certainly be a big incentive for individual developers to start with dreambox development and contribute to better dreambox software." OpenPli is the public source repository for the PLi® software that runs on the DM500, DM56x0, DM600, DM7000, DM7020, DM7025, DM800, DM8000 and shortly the DM500 HD series of set top boxes for Cable, Terrestrial and Satellite TV and radio.
