Thai "pet Names" For Countries

Recommended Posts

Jeeze Louize, reading Thai newspapers is tough. Full of slang and jargon and abbreviations. And that's just the headlines.

You might run into some pet names for countries that may or may not be used (also) in regular speech. (My wife tipped me off to the common ones)

America ... mack-gaa

Japan ... yun (falling tone)

England ... meuang-phuu-dee (land of the nobles)

Italy ... meuang-naam-hawm (land of perfume) .. or is this France?

Any others?

-NG (khon-mack-gaa)

I read some really interesting ones during the World Cup events. One country was referred to as Samba. Another was referred to as something like free sex or something... Rather nasty... But they don't think so.

Think they call Korea... Gao Heeeeeee........ With a rising tone and a big laugh :o

I completely understand why my wife did not share that one with me.
