I was given an International Money Order (issued by MoneyGram USA) in USD. I've taken it to probably half a dozen banks here in Chiang Mai, and the MoneyGram office, and none of them will accept it. It has no beneficiary name written on it yet, so I could make it out it to anyone, my Thai wife tried her banks and they just don't want to know. Seems like I'm stuck with it. To me it looks the same as a cheque. Don't banks here accept foreign cheques for deposit? I realize there is a fee involved in cashing a foreign cheque, I don't mind to pay it. But they won't even touch it!!

Has anyone ever had any success cashing one of these here?

If you have a bank account in foreign currency in Thailand, you could deposit it to your account. It will probably take between six weeks to two months or longer for the cheque to clear. There are many forged and fraudulent cheques floating around, and the banks have to protect themselves.
