Has anyone got some information please.

I live in Thailand and in a few weeks I am thinking of driving into Cambodia.

My car is in my girlfriends name and she won't be travelling with me.

What are the regulations ? Will there be any problems at the border ?

All information would be well appreciated

Thanx

Is the car fully paid off and book held by the GF.. You need the book to leave and the reason finance company's hold it is because its not yours to leave the country with (until you have paid 100%)...

Also your aware you wont be insured once over the border.. Also once over the border it used to be you were supposed to stay inside the region of that border post.. A law commonly ignored but your then a target of every cop that sees the Thai plates.

It can be done.. You need a letter of authorization from the owner etc.. The motoring section explains it in more details..

Car have to be in your name, otherwise no border crossing, except your GF travel with you. Other problem: You can drive only at the border provice. Can't go to Phnom Phen or Sihanoukville. Cambodians have this stupid rules. They want that you leave your car in Ko kong Province, for example and continue traveling with theyr local Taxi Mafia, if you wannna go furture. Who knows your car still there if you come back. It's not fair, because cambo cars can drive everywhere in Thailand. So therefore i'll never support cambodia anymore and make NO holiday there.

Cross at Aranyaprathet/Poipet and this is not a problem. You can drive all the way to Phnom Phen if you want. On the other hand, if you try to cross at Prum they won't let you cross at all without permission from Phnom Phen. The rules in Cambodia are variable depending on which border crossing you choose. You need to ask for information about a specific crossing. There situation at one can not be assumed at another.

Same plan here.

Have a car on my moms name, but 100% fully paid and we both have thai citizenship.

- Need to put car on my thai name? As she is not in LOS now.

- which border gives me access to most or all cambodian provinces?

- which border to avoid due thailand/cambodian fights?

- im with tokyo marine, do they offer temporary insurance addons for travel outside thailand? if not, what temporary additional insurance should i have, eventhough i only plan to be there for 4 days

Many thanks!

Even though I have nothing to add to the discussion, I'm bumping this to the top so someone might be able to reply and give some more clarity on the issue.

Thread started in 2009...still getting interest, someone must know!

guess nobody knows.... which is hard to believe... :s

I tried very hard to get information, how I can drive down from Hat Lek to Sihanoukville legal. It seems to me that there is only one option. A temporary import license. This will cost you a lot of hassle and money, on return to Thailand the same procedure backwards.

I crossing with my girlfriends car, with the original car book and a letter of allowance from my girlfriend. Additional I take her blue house book. On the allowance paper you must have 30 baht in 5 baht stamps. These stamps are government stamps, no post office stamps.(you get these stamps at every revenue department).

Once the Thai officer at Hat Lek puts the information in the computer, second time it needs 5 minutes. Afterwards you give the papers, you got from her, to the custom office and receive a permit to move the car for 4 weeks outside Thailand. In general, a very easy procedure.

You come to the Cambodia side, you give the received papers from Thai custom to the Cambodian custom (car) officer. Tell him you want to go 2-3 days to Koh Kot,nothing else, and pay him 500 Baht.(it doesn't matter how long you stay, it only makes it more expensive for you) He will keep the Thai custom issued (car) papers you received and gives you a red laminated A4 size "number". You only allowed to drive in the Koh Kot province.

I drove at least 15 times down to Sihanouk in 2010-2011, but recently the cops in Sihanouk stared to annoying me. It started will "illegal" dark foiled windows, which they wanted to scratch off and ended lately with confiscating the car due illegal import. I got out through connections but I not dare to try it again, as the cops getting really nasty and the risk is too high that I have to leave my car in Sihanouk.

Sadly the good times are over in Sihanouk and they wont see my money again.

I tried all connections, but beside the temporary import license I couldn't find any possibility...Silom

It seems now, that the new police chief of Sihanouk realized the nonsense of causing problems when coming with a car or motorcycle from TH.

Several resort owners can be asked by arrival to get a prepaid ticket from the chief.

Prices are $4-6 a day. This allows you not get bugged by the BIB during your stay in Snouky.
