Over the last few months while I've been reading up on teaching in Thailand I got the impression that it was reasonably common for a newbie entering a teaching job in Thailand to have to do a lot of chasing up at their school in order to secure a work permit. Given that these new visa restrictions have come into play, forcing people without working visas to take a trip to the border every 14 days, I was wondering has this resulted in these matters being taken care of more efficiently. Or is it business as usual. Or am I taking too much of the negative information to heart, and actually it isn't as bad as all that.

For the record when I do come across I'll have a bachelors degree from Cardiff, a 4 week TEFL course from (hopefully) Siam Educational experience, and be timing it for the April hiring season in order to increase my chances of getting a good school.

Should I be worried? Should I chill, Winston?

One way that course providers such as SEE can help is to get you a longer-term, multiple entry B visa at your local consulate, such as in Cardiff or Hull, Houston or Perth. Then you may only have to do a single run (say, to Mae Sai near Chiang Mai) at the end of 60 or 90 days. Don't fly over without a visa and get a 30 day tourist stamp on arrival.

Good point PB. If the op sorts out his course before he leaves his home country, normally it's straightforward to obtain a 1-year visa.

Yes, it depends on the consulate. I once applied in Houston for my third consecutive one-year non immigrant B. I had for the third time a properly stamped letter from a real school in BKK, but instead I presented the scrap of paper without a letterhead, based on the rough draft I had prepared. Below it somebody had scribbled the name of the director (Wombat Sillywichitaranamabasakorn, as I recall) and stamped it with something that looked like a receipt for somtam. Houston accepted it!

Thanks for the heads up guys. Unfortunately I'm turning my journey there into a travelling experience - so I'll actually be leaving the UK about 12 months before I get to Thailand. I would assume this would make sorting the visa out before hand much more difficult/impossible - would anybody be able to confirm or deny this, or offer any alternative solutions given my situation.

Really appreciate the support so far everybody, thanks.

what should the letter say as it will be from a mate working for a company but I don't actually have a job with him. Im getting it so I dont have to bothr doing visa runs every 3-6 months

^^You're right, and I expect that you'll find yourself on a visa run to change your status before commencing work in Thailand after you arrive.

^If you are representing yourself as working for someone when you are not, that would count as 'fraud,' and it's both not recommended and not permitted material for discussion on the forum. As far as I know, Non-Imm-B is only for work, but I am more of a teaching advisor than a visa advisor- recommend you double check this in the visa room.

Them New Visa Regulations
I'll have a bachelors degree from Cardiff, a 4 week TEFL course

Maybe you should go for the 5 week course.

For a Non B from Hull just a letter from the school or company offering you employment send the original not a photo copy, application fee 100 GBP, Bing Bang Bosh 2 days later a nice one year Non B.

^I'm leaving the previous post as an example of what I'm very soon going to make a warning offense in the teacher's forum- unsolicited, off-topic criticisms of others' language. It's not the point or purpose of the forum; it's not clever; and it's not encouraged.

In the present thread, I think it's a bit of intentional humour and slang. Get a grip, people.

Motion seconded. The complaints are usually pedantic, are flaming the poster or flaming the teaching profession. Posters here are not teaching in the classroom when they post. Some are not teaching English, or it is not their native language. Some are joking, or have poor hand coordination, or are terminally silly. :o
