I just got a new desktop. it advertised a 640 GB hard drive but i see it has two built in with one labeled acer 183 GB and 1 labeled Data w 348 GB. I also have 2 removable HDD bays which are empty

my question, what is the best use of these drives? I am guess that I use the acer for the programs and the all my saved data i put in the #2 but I am not sure why? what is the best way to use this and does it matter which one i download from the internet to?

what do i do with the HDD bays?

on the "computer screen, in additon to the two built in drives there are also 4 labels " Devices with Removable storage [6]

removable disk D

removable disk E

removable disk F

removable disk G

clicking on any of the above and i get a message that says "Please insert a disk into removable Disk [corresponding Letter]

DVD RW drive I

BD-Rom drive J BD = blue ray?

any help would be appreciated since asking the sales people is a joke and the manual is not clear enough

Refer to the various multi-media slots (item 9 on your advert list), one of which will be for an SD card - probably suit your camera or mobile phone, but there are many permutations.

As for what you store where depends on a number of factors and if they bother you or not, also what is the level of your computer experiance and likely usage.

Using the faster HDD is wise if you are video editting, using the larger drive for storage if you are an avid torrent downloader.

If you indend to store masses of data consider a back up process - where will you put your 600 GB copies?

As for the empty spaces, 1TB HDDs are getting cheaper, I'll be filling one of my free slots with one soon.

Don't worry about the division of programs vs. data, a holdover from Win98 days. Both need to be backed up. So I'd use the Acer for most everything and the Data drive for backup--say, do an image once a week and a daily copy of the data.

heres my layout so you can see

C Drive = Vista 64bit Installation = 195GB

D Drive = Series = 150GB (full)

E Drive = Random Progs = 130GB (3/4 Full)

F Drive = Games / Movies / MP3 = 750GB (Full)

G Drive = Games = 150GB (full)

H Drive = XP 32bit installation = 150GB

J Drive = External Backup = 1TB (Full)

K Drive = Stuff = 200 GB (Full)

L Drive = Music = 200 GB (full)

If it's an Acer it's likely that your two drives are actually one drive split into two partitions. It's a common habit of theirs thus backing up 'Acer' onto 'Data' would leave you without backups if you had a drive failure.

Ha! Yep, bet that's the case. Better check and do get yourself another HD if so.

yep, i think they partitioned it, maybe the computer sales guy that was "helping" me. he started loading all this stuff after calling and saying it came into the store until i had to grab his arm and tell him it was my computer and not to start putting on software he thinks i might like. TIT. ill bet he partitioned my drive cause that's what he thought i might want

i guess its too late now since i have been loading stuff for 8 hours doing set up. i loaded all my programs on first drive and info and saves on second. i guess there is no was to take out the second partition without losing all my infor and starting over, something i am not will to do

I don't think the sales guy did the partitioning. Every time I've bought an Acer they've always had 2 partitions from the factory.
