Bar Brawl Krabi

This is a synopsis of what happened at the Luna Bar, Ao Nang last Friday evening 6 March 2009:

A 27yo gay and rather slim Thai medical doctor is sitting at the bar drinking his second bottle of beer talking to the bartender. His eyes sweep the room and he catches the eye of a rather large 25-30yo male farang, seemingly intoxicated, sitting at a table with his Thai "female friend" who had also had a few. The farang feels threatened about being looked at and makes loud disparaging remarks directed at the doctor about "f*#king faggots". The doctor takes offense and demands an apology from the farang. The farang refuses using rather colourful language. The doctor repeats his demand but to no avail. An arguement insues. The doctor hits the farang over the head with a beer bottle cutting him open (which requires five stitches to close) and the farang gives the doctor a black eye. A bevy of police arrive. The farang is escorted to the hospital and the doctor taken to the police station. The following morning the doctor is escorted to the airport for the first flight bck to Bangkok. No arrests and no 'fines' paid (at least on the doctors side...). The bartender, as witness, corroborates the doctors story about the act of provocation on part of the farang.

So who was right and who was wrong? Should the doctor have just ignored the farang? Should he just put up with his bigoted comments? Was it justifuable to use violence? Will the farang have learned his lesson and think twice about opening his mouth again?

What would you have done in a situation like this?

Although I can't condone the farang's use of offensive language (I mean the F***'s, C***'s etc.. Not the the word 'faggot' as that isn't even classed as cussing/swearing) I think the Doctor needed a bloody good hiding purely for using a bottle as a weapon.. It brings him down to the same level as the scum who glass/stab people in pubs over an insult or cross word... You can get over a black eye or a broken nose but being cracked over the head can be life threatening... As I have had a fair bit of unwelcome attention from gay guys in Singapore in the past I can say I know how the farang felt.. It's not the fact that they want to show their interest (it's a free world) It's the fact that many don't take 'no' for an answer and continue to make 'googoo' eyes that gets them into trouble... Before all the gays jump to defend themselves and call me names just think of the same situation when a guy makes unwelcome advances on a female in a pub... It's not really any different apart from the fact that the girl is less likely to be able to defend herself verbally/physically from some brute who things she 'fancies' him but won't admit it... No matter your sexuality you should understand that 'no' is no and if you don't get a warm reception do think they are being coy.. They just aren't interested.. Hope the farang wasn't badly hurt and hope the nasty Doc catches the clap...

I'm interested in how you got hold of this story?

Are you a friend of the farang, the Thai doctor or the bartender?

Or were you a casual bystander who did nothing to defuse the situation or break up the fight?

Anyone who is so homophobic that they resort to drunken abuse about "fagots" etc doesnt belong in Asia either as a tourist or an expat. It is part of the "deal" to expect casual confrontation with people of all persuations.

The doc needs to have his own attitude adjustment as well, what an idiot.

However, the blame also lies with the bartender or publican who has a responsibility to protect his patrons from this sort of behaviour dispayed by both parties.

All three need a good headbut :o

I was ones bullied out of a bar in Koh Samed. A bar lady became aggressive and verbally abusive when she found out that I was not interested in her 'offerings'.

I find it very awkward to enter any straight premises where hormones are running. It seems some straight guys start to defend their 'territory' against possible threats - this especially when they are engaged with someone with pussy scent. This has happened more than ones and I nowadays avoid these places even if they advertise themselves as 'mixed'. No thrill there for me. Remarkably - this has never occurred in Thai places to that degree. Not that I say it might.

What comes to this situation, I find that the Thai in question probably thought that he could get away with it anyway. He was more sober so I just wonder... This, of course, happens when we run into someone who 'mii naa'. I have tried to avoid confrontation whenever the other person is Thai. It never pays off trying to offend them. Not that I have run into unpleasentries with farangs neither.

Keeping clear head keeps one out of trouble - most of the time... :o

Possibly this is a culture clash situation from the Thai docs point of view. Gays from Anglo countries are used to there being potentially violent reactions to subtle sexual overtures. Not so much in Thailand. It sounds like the Thai doc was genuinely offended that this farang SOB was importing this poison flavor of homophobia to Thailand. Just trying to stand up for traditional Thai cultural values. I like this doctor. Its generally a good thing that word gets out that some homos actually fight. I used to know some gay guys who would patrol cruising parks looking for gay bashers, to bash the gay bashers (they carried baseball bats and they knew how to use them). Yes they were vigilantes but the cops were on the side of the bashers at the time. Not all of us are this brave, but you've got to give them some credit for challenging stereotypes.

The serious point is that becoming confrontational in Thailand is not wise. The results of what would be considered 'normal' Saturday night out behaviour in the West may reap results that you're not expecting.

Considering that both parties were idiots and both parties were injured, they'd probably do best to let bygones be bygones. In my view the foreigner's response to flirtation was the first offensive action, so ultimately he was at fault; however, I never condone violence- especially, as in this case, against the mentally handicapped- and the doc started that.

Thank you all for your comments. Since posting this thread some more details/corrections have come to light which may or may not lead you to rethink your comments...

The Thai doctor was walking to the toilet, past the table the Australian farang and his Thai whore were sitting when the Thai whore starting making 'sissy noises' directed at the doctor. After exiting the toilet the doctor went to take his seat back at the bar when it was obvious the two at the table were making comments about him in not a very discrete manner. The bar was quite full of mostly farang patrons who started to stare at the person these comments were directed at. Apparently words like "f@cking yellow monkey faggot" were eminating from the mouth of the intoxicated Australian for all in the bar to hear. There was no "gay staring" or overtures of that sort.

Not to be humiliated in front of all these people and given that the small petite bar staff were only content in observing the unfolding drama the doctor approached the two saying to the Thai whore in English (so all there could understand) that the farang was only interested in "what was between her legs not her ears" and demanded an apology: twice. The burly Australian, expletives emanating forth in a rapid torrent, then pushed the doctor away whereby the doctor grabbed a bottle from the table and smashed it over the head of the Australian. Bar patrons (not bar staff) separated the two before the fight escalated. Hotel security & management (from which the bar is located) were called to control the situation and then the police came to take all three to the nearby police station. Contrary to what was said in the original post, the Aussie was taken to the hospital after the police station. While at the police station, and the doctor was being discharged, the Thai whore started shouting at the doctor about getting a gang together to 'teach the doctor a lesson'. The doctor requested police protection and was escorted to the airport the following morning. Apparently the doctor's uncle is quite a senior policeman at National Police Headquarters, Bangkok.
