Evening All,

I'm not one to normally complain (honest!) I love my life here on Samui. Sure there are crazy things going on, like the state of the roads, idiots driving cement lorries at stupid speeds, shootings, etc. etc. But that is part of living here, it adds a bit of excitement to daily life and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I've never had any trouble here and always found the local Thai's to be pleasant and welcoming.

Tonight, my girl and I went to Kraochaobaan Restaurant which is just before Hua Thanon on the left-hand side of the ring road. It was very interesting to see that the Thai language menu (given to my girl) had different prices to the English language menu... :D

Now the difference in price isn't the point here, it's an extra 10-20 baht per dish on the farang menu. My problem is the principal behind it. This is the first time I've come across this here and in my opinion it is kee-kwai of the highest grade. :D

Anyway, just to give these guys a bit of a test my girl and I ordered the same thing. Now surely they couldn't charge the Thai price to my girl and the Farang price to me. This should fool them... :D

The bill came and low and behold we were both charged the more expensive price. So my girl enquired as to why in the Thai menu her iced tea was 30 baht, but we'd been charged 50 baht for it. The guy was pretty rude in his reply and said this was the old menu and they hadn't updated the prices on it yet and if she didn't want to pay the difference he would. :o

I did think this was pretty nice of him, but we declined his offer and paid. I'm thinking of going back tomorrow and when they give me the farang menu I'll politely ask in Thai for the Thai language menu... :wai:

On another note my friends and I tried Sabiang Lae last night, the food was great and there was one menu with both Thai & English language with the same price for each dish. :D

We've just moved to the Hua Thanon & HinTa/HinYai area, if anyone could recommend any decent places to eat around there that would be great.

Matt.

A cheaper Thai menu is nothing unusual. I have even seen one and the same menu with 2 different prices for the same dishes, first written in English than in Thai.

The response that the cheaper prices are old is a standard response in such cases. As was the anger of the waiter, because "other Farangs pay and give a huge tip, so why do you make troubles?"

TIT we are living in. Relax and forget it.

I know that restaurant well, and I am well aware of the fact that they have two menus. My GF and I haven't been there since she got seriously ill from bad goong. She had the squits for two days, seriously messy stuff. As for Sabaing Lae, now that place is top notch. Highly recommend the King Prawns in Tamarind sauce aroi aroi. I would recommend steering clear of Kraochaobaan Restaurant and not just because of their blatant racism...

I think you'll find the correct pronouncement of this restaurant is kruar-chowbarn. I know the place well, unfortunately. I had a similar experience as I ordered by the thai menu and the waiter nearly attacked me when I questioned the bill. It reminds me of the banya-on restaurant over at soi 7 in bangkok. A similar experience. Again two prices, one for thai and one for farang. I used to get my girlfriend to order take away instead - maybe you should try that?...

Topper.

The squirts aside ( thanks for the details of your GF whoever that was :o ), i think it's par for the course here & happens a lot more than we actually realise anyway...

a friend of mine is doing the same thing in chaweng, i have the thai price aswell as my friends when they go with me.

last time one of my friend went alone and they talked with the workers there about me and guess what they were charged the foreigner price even if his girlfriend is thai.

crazy isn't it?

if i was you i would never go back again to a restaurant where you're taken for a fool and where they talk you bad when questionning about the price.

That double standard stuff truly sucks.

Some Thai people who are very close to me just opened a small bar and restaurant in that area, on the beachfront near the bridge before Hua Thanon, near the health office.

Called The Boathouse Bar & Cafe, she does home cooked Thai and Farang food. And no dubble price carp.

I was the initial food (and beer, whisky, etc) tester, I think the food is very good. (so's the beer :-)

I think it is an excellent place, but then I am biased, eh?

Cheers.

I'm sorry to disagree,, but my girlfriend and i eat at this restaurant 2/3 times a week,,and they now give me 15% discount every time i visit. the food is very reasonably priced for the very nice and well kept beach location, maybe if it was a one priced restaurant , they would charge everyone farang prices,,!

As for the service,, i like to have my prawns topped and tailed,, and they do it all the time for me,,never any whinging, and i've always found the food first class,,, in fact i recently invited a friend of mine who is a member of the world food and beverage society there, and he commented how good the food was!!

Yes, just avoid the place. Yesterday I was the first customer of my usual thai restaurant (last month always full), maybe they start doing 10% discount, happy hours... :o samui is a bit empty....

I've only noticed this year no usual 20% increase in january but lot's place are listing fruit shakes with or without ice at different price! Ice must be very cheap compared to fruit.....assuming it is made with "good" water...

It was those topped and tailed prawns that gave my girlfriend the squits..
