Tracking Systems

Featured Replies

Does anybody know of any tracking systems that are available in Thailand, I am looking for 3 altogether, one for my laptop, one for my car and one for the motorbike.

Is there one that comes with a handheld device you can use yourself?

Cheers

The above company sells tracking devices, which can be used both for car and motorbike.

Most of those companies let the devices connect to their own servers, and you'll have to pay a fee (monthly) to get access to the location.

You can also buy stand-alone devices, but they are not exactly cheap (but well worth for example to hide somewhere in a Harley!).

For example this device.

Just under 500 US$, with a quad band GSM unit usable all over the world.

For a Laptop, I'm not sure such a device exists (with gps unit built), not much use if the GPS receiver is external and easily removed by the thieves.

You can download free software which allows you to see which IP address is assigned to the laptop by an ISP whenever it goes on-line.

However, before an ISP will reveal a subscriber/address connected to that IP address at a given time, you'd need a court warrant, and I reckon in Thailand this won't be easy.

Do note that when you have an Imac, the software can also activate a built in webcam whenever the laptop goes on-line, so if the thief is somebody you know, you'll have him cornered pretty fast!

If you have a laptop running XP, there is software available which snaps a picture everytime your laptop is booted, and if there is internet connectivity it'll send an email with the picture attached to any other e-mail. (tip, use gmail and their smtp servers, works from pretty much any ISP worldwide!)

There's even cheaper options!

Both Mologogo and google latitude allow you to track gps capable phones. You would however need an unlimited gprs package (1000 Baht/month) as the software continuously updates the location to the servers of the respective networks.

Hide it in your car, hook it up to some continuous power (battery) and you can at all times, extremely accurate know where the phone and hence your car is!

Or you could buy a cheapish secondhand PDA with GPS built in. There are several software solutions (free), which when you send a request to the device by sms, will reply back to you by sms with the exact location. Not as good, as when they park the car in a garage or something, it might not be possible to get a GPS fix!
