Why Stay 100 Days In A Temple ?

Hi all

My girlfriends grandmother died about 5 weeks ago , since then my GF has been staying at budda ( a temple ) she says she want to stay 100 days ,as a mark off respect or something like that , i think the family is putting a bit of pressure on her too .

Also , I’m off to visit her soon, now I’m not expecting a roll in the hey or anything like that , but the way she is talking , it sounds like ill have to be 50 paces apart at all times ,

Last time i visited her (when she was staying at the temple ) i was allowed to stay in the room next to her , this time she is at a bigger temple (more serious ) and she says it won’t be the same this time , I got to get a hotel and not get to close to her !

Can anyone tell what is going on here .... I’m not new to Thailand and understand a bit of the culture but don’t understand the need to stay 100 days ..... Why not one week , or a month.

Also .

i could do with a bit of help with the address of the temple

can any one translate this for me ....... and if pos send me a link to it with Google maps or something

Mae Chi Rin Phuula ............. Mae chi is a nun

Wat nong hua raed

Tambon Leam thong

Amphur Nong Bun Maak

Cangwat Nakhorn Ratchasima (Korat)

presumably she has shaved her head too.... as opposed to merely being a Yogi (keeping the eight precepts, dressed in white, and meditating)

unless the mae chi is in charge of her and she IS a yogi....

Making merit to be then transferred or donated to the deceased is normal after deaths of loved relatives...sometimes male family members are ordained as monks for a short time. This is done to try and help the deceased to get a good rebirth.

Your girlfriend sounds like a devout Buddhist...having stayed at the temple before..you are lucky to have her.

Nuns are usually kept well seperate from male yogis and you wouldn't be able to visit their rooms.

wow thanks Fabianfred , great reply ! thanks to krading too ; )

i wondered if you could tell me a little bit more about the length of time she / anyone else would stay at a temple ,for such things like death int he family

is it normal for thai people to stay so long at a temple after a death .......... ( i do know she cared/ loved her grandmother alot)

also her grandmother had 5 sons , my GF dad (one of the sons ) works hard ....so could not go to budda i presume ....... but her other 4 sons are complete drunk, lazy, gambling fools ....... but there not in budda

and what if all the family did work .. talking time off work to go stay at budda for 3 months , would surely annoy the boss ?

thanks all

i would say that it is not normal to stay at a temple for 100 days.... perhaps aas you say your GF really loved her and knowing the rest of the family wouldn't help decided to go it alone.

It IS usual to have a small ceremony 100 days after the death....usually just merit making at home.

It is not very frequent nowadays for any family member to stay at a temple for even a few days.... maybe your GF just took the chance to get away from her family.

as I said before... it looks as if you have found a jewel with her.... they are rare and precious....

I would say she's taking her grandmothers death pretty serious, and as the rest of the family don't seem to care too much, decided to take the merit making on her own. And probably to get away from her drunken, lazy, gambling uncles. I've found at the temples, it's mostly women who take Buddhism serious, while men kind of just go there to hang out with their friends. And of course, normally there's a friend there with something to drink...
