I have read with interest over the last month or 2 that the CAT EV-DO 'CCU-680' internet modem is one of the most efficient basis internet sytem around. (No landlines).

On a recent trip up to the sticks - Surin (Isaan) I went in to the CAT office to enquire whether I could get EV-DO where I live. They replied "Yes" if I live withing 15 km. of their nearest mast. (I do - about 8km. - but I would still want this checked).

They tried to sell me a slow system - "No thanks. What's faster? Do they hav a CCU-680?"

Typical Thai they did not know what I was talking about. They had never heard of it!! T.I.T.

They finally said they could get an MC727 but none in stock.

Having got back to Bangkok, I see on the CAT website that they supply both the CCU-680 and the Novatel Ovation MC727 which they describe as 'new'.

They seem to have similar Specs.

Does anyone have any advise, comparisons or pitfalls about these 2 systems?

Thanks.

I use CCu680 in Phuket and it's OK, not fabulous and not appalling, just OK. Last time I checked it's not possible to use it in Bangkok so you need to check coverage for your location. Also, expect intermittent poor performance as CAT rolls out their network and disrupts service for days at a time.
