Head Pain

Featured Replies

Hello there Sheryl et al

I have had occasional modest ache behind the right ear area over about three weeks, noticeable about 3 or 4 times. A couple of inches behind and a bit above the higher end of the ear flap. Not an exact spot slightly amorphous as with neuralgia over a few sqare inches.

I associated it with an infection as I had an ear infection from swimming the first time but who knows. I woke with it today....mild, but enough to warrant a parcetemol. Last night i went swimming.

It MAY have been associated with swimming each time.

So.....is there some way an infection or something can be transmitted? Or are there an equivalent to sinuses there which could irritate somehow?

Or had I better start spending my money fast!!! :o

cheers John

The location of the pain is not associated with any specific anatomical structure that could cause it so I think is is a "referred" pain from another structure sharing the same sensory nerve root. This would be the ear and inner ear canal so it would be a good idea to have the ear checked as well as the mastoid sinus in the bone just behind the ear.

You are probably correct in associating it with swimming.

An ENT consult is suggested which may include an X-ray of the sinuses depending on the examination.

Hope fully not big bucks!!

Good luck!

Thanks FBN useful answer.

I think perhaps the pain moves a bit, maybe along the temporal line, which bears out the referred pain thing.

I shall see the ENT specialist at the RAM tomorrow. Luckily my girlfriend works there and I get treated like a king.

agree with FBN.

get it checked with an ENT.

Hey John, replying a bit late to this I should think, you are probably all mended by now. If it is the swimming that is the cause try ear plugs you can buy at the pharmacist, waterproof, made especially for use in the water and helps alleviate "swimmers ear".

Thankyou all and just to say it's cleared up itself.....

Now you'd better skip over to my "roseate lips" thread.

cheers John
