It seems that there are some people here who have some pretty high-end camera equipment and I was wondering if you guys have any sort of insurance policy on the equipment that would cover you if your gear was stolen while travelling. When I was living in the States, I had a rider on my homeowner's policy to cover my camera equipment (either inside or outside the house) up to a limit that I specified. Are there similar policies available in Thailand or elsewhere in SE Asia? I looked at a couple of "Travel" policies underwritten in Singapore but those all had low limits on theft, offering only a fraction of what a high-end DSLR would cost. So what do you guys do, just chance it?

Cover whilst travelling doesn't exist over here.

My U.S. company covers my household goods and valuables with a Renter's Policy and a Personal Articles Floater (which lists high end items like cameras). And, yes, they very specifically said the policies cover me here for the long term as a resident.

Since you asked "while travelling" I am not sure if you live here permanently or not. Prior to my moving here and while traveling to and from the US, my old homeowner's policy and the same PAF covered me.

Have you checked with U.S. companies to see what you can get?

At one time I had a policy on the contents of my house in Thailand through a broker in London,

that way I got all risks cover of valuables outside the house.

I'm based in Singapore actually. When I lived in the US I had a policy similar to the one that you mentioned. It saved my butt once when my hotel room was robbed in Koh Samui and the theif made off with a big bag of Nikon gear - insurance company paid up a considerable sum for that one. I was hoping to find a similar policy over here but thus far have not. Maybe I'll check with the guys at Cathay Photo and see what they can suggest; can't believe that people who buy pro calibre cameras and lenses would just risk it.

We don't seem to have much choice over here. When I was UK based it was simply a matter of tagging an "All Risks" extension to your home policy and specifying high nett worth items and "Bobs ya Uncle" we were covered.

I've searched high and low over here but can't find such a contract.

If anybody has any ideas I for one would welcome them.

p.s. I've already tried "Thai Visa Insurance" :o
