Ryanair's prize for weirdest money-making idea

A BUDGET airline's latest cost-cutting stunt could see passengers paying for oxygen in a mid-air emergency.

But don't worry, it's just part of European low-cost airline Ryanair's latest promotion.

The airline is calling for strange money-making ideas after being overwhelmed with suggestions when controversially suggesting that passengers should pay to use the toilet during flights, earlier this month.

The airline is offering almost $2000 to the best “ancillary revenue idea”.

Ryanair spokesperson Stephen McNamara said the airline received dozens of money-making suggestions after the proposed toilet charge.

“Since we confirmed that we are considering a toilet charge we have received a huge number of ancillary revenue suggestions from passengers and we want more,” he said.

“We are asking passengers to submit their ideas with the most creative winning 1,000 euros cash."

Mr McNamara said some of the best ideas receive so far include charging for toilet paper with O-Leary’s face on it, charging for reading the safety cards, charging for using oxygen masks or the emergency exit, or an extra fee for bikini-clad cabin crew.

The company’s website shows a mock-up of a safety card, saying passengers will be charged to use oxygen masks or exit the aircraft in an emergency.

“If the plane has to land in an emergency, insert your card into the chip and pin device. When the transaction is complete, exit the aircraft,” the card reads.

The competition closes on March 30, when the airline will choose the winning idea.
