Does anyone know where I can buy a small compressor for blowing up car tyres?... or even a foot-pump.

Got myself a half-flat this morning on my truck. Guess it's time to get on the bike!

Mate, Tesco Lotus has a few of them, I bought the cheap one for 200 odd baht & whilst the gauge isnt accurate on it, it go well. I know another guy whos had the same one for years and its still going strong.

Thanks for the info everyone. Took a bike ride to Tesco and picked one up.

The Taxi guys outside let me test it on one of their cars (didn't want to get home to find it doesn't work!)

Got back and inflated the tyre OK. Washed it down, it has a huge screw stuck in the centre.

Can anyone recommend anywhere to get my puncture repaired?... I'm going to try the place opposite tesco.

Matt,

They are a dime a dozen, any of those dodgy roadside bike shops will do the trick, last time I paid 30 baht i think, can't remember, but they obviously just patched the inner tube for that price.

If its your bike, you may want to have a look at the inner tube when the remove it and perhaps make the decision to replace the entire thing, depending on the damage.

I have been really lucky, every time I've had a flat Ive been within 100 metres of somchai's repair shop & have always received EXCELLENT service, with a smile and a laugh. In some of these shops they drop everything when a customer wheels his machine in with a flat.....its an emergency situation :o

Car tyres,

well, you can try the traffic lights near Tesco Lotus, coming from Lotus hang a left, kind of opposite the entrance to the Wat, there's a shop with a massive tyre outside, try that one, the guy knows what he's doing. All taxi and mnin van drivers tend to go there if they have a puncture.

Matt

I wish I had read your post earlier. I have a commercial air compressor sitting in my carport, not being used, well at least not until Songkran anyway. That when I throw it into the back of my Suzuki and connect it up to the 80 gallon water tank. Should be a "blast' this year, pardon the pun. Will be around the baan yaon area.

Thanks for all the help. This was actually on my truck and not my bike.

I got my tyre fixed at the place opposite Tesco, very reasonable as well. I had two punctures, one nail and one screw. 200 baht for them both.

Thanks again.

Mark,

The compressor was 600baht, hardly expensive... Plus it fits in the space behind my back-seat, so it's pretty decent. It means no more trips to the local garage to fill up my tyres.

I wouldn't recommend fixaflat, it's total garbage. It's not really an "inflater" it fills the tire with crap. If it's left in the tire too long it will eventually settle and cause bad wear and poor driving ability.

It's also a pain in the ass when you change out your tire, very messy. You need to get your tire repaired ASAP if you have that goop in it.

McLovin,

Are you serious?... You're going to connect your compressor a water tank. That's insane!

With that sort of power you could seriously hurt someone. A high pressure water jet could take someone's eye out!

Did you know people have been killed playing around with compressors?...

Why buy an expensive compressor that takes up space?

Just get one of those aerosol cans for temporary fixes.

Fix-a-flat

It's not like you ever have far to go to find a repair shop in Samui.

I carry around a can of that stuff in the truck for emergencies, but I had to get it in Bangkok as I couldn't find it on Samui (maybe it's available somewhere, though).

Fix-a-flat is for very temporary use. According to my knowledge (and this product has been around since I was on a learner's permit in the US), the stuff is not a problem if you have your tire fixed soon after the use of the product.

Having said that, 600 baht is cheaper than getting a bargirl to blow up your flat....

How do you make an air compressor squirt water? I believe this is the traditional way of celebrating Songkran by Buddhist monks, isn't it?

Yes, it's a stop-gap measure to get you to a service station to have your flat fixed properly- it's not meant to last more than a short time (it will not fully inflate your tire either).
