Does anyone know a good place in Bangkok to do a checkup for Sexually Transmitted Diseases? They should be able to do an extensive checkup, and speak good english.

Anyone has experience with doing this?

oh dear dear me :D:D:D most places you go to will say you have something even if you dont, cos they want to sell you the medication, best just go to a good chemist and ask for : zithramax, not spelt right i know, but that is what it sounds like, 4 tabs first time 2 tabs 12 hours later, about 550 bht, clears up everything apart from HIV !! not that i would no, a friend told me :o

I have no medical background but I guestion the use of zithromax as a first line treatment for STD's. Perhaps someone with first hand knowledge will chime in on this one.

Correct. Do not attempt to self medicate.

Any of the international hospitals can do this for you with good English speaking etc... Bumrungrad, BNH, B H, Samitivej. Make an appointment with either ain infectious disease specialist or (assuming you are makle) urologist, you can do this online. They will do a thorough check up and certainly not tell you that you have anything you don't.

However some ofthese small private clinics, especially the ones with prominent signs about STD, may.

If cost is a factor, options include:

Silom Community Clinic in Bangkok Christian Hospital (on Silom Rd)

Thai Red Cross Anonymous Clinic

1871 Rama 4 Road Bangkok 10330

Phone: (662) 2256 - 4109

Fax: (662) 254 - 7577

The Thai Red Cross as Sheryl mentioned is excellent. they offer anonymous HIV testing and I believe other STD testing as well. They do take your fingerprint as a means to identify you so one could argue it's not truly anonymous. I've been there twice. The first time I refused the fingerprint and they still let me get tested. The second time they made me get the fingerprint. HIV results are available in 1 hour. The Sala Daeng MRT stop is closest. This place is very reputable and participates in worldwide AIDS research. However not all of the staff there speaks good English so this might not meet one of your criteria.

I have found Soi 11 Clinic off Sukhumwit to be good as well. It's about half way down the soi on the left down a little sub-soi so it's less embarrassing to pop in. They are a little more Third Worldish in how they do things than the top hospitals. For example the nurses don't always wear rubber gloves and they announce if you are negative or positive for HIV while you are sitting in the waiting area. That said I still think this is one of the best choices. The doctor there speaks very good English and is not a hack, I was impressed with his knowledge and suggestions. I have been tested for every STD at this place and was satisfied with the process though the lack of gloves while drawing my blood was a bit disconcerting but they did use new clean needles so I guess I can live with that. For Gonorrhea and Chlamydia they can test on site and have your results in minutes. For syphilis and HIV they send your blood to a hospital and results are available the next day with a full print out of your exact results. They do ask for your name but they don't check your ID so you can just make one up, thus it's basically anonymous. Just don't forget your 'name'!

It is true Zithromax will cure most STDs outside of HIV but due to the prevalence of antibiotic use in Thailand there are some very antibiotic resistant strains of Gonorrhea going around so you are better off knowing if you have anything and getting some medical guidance than just randomly popping Zithro.

While the top hospitals are probably the most trustworthy I have found they seem to look at you like you've been swimming in a gutter when you request any STD check ups. So unless you have thick skin I wouldn't go to them. They also are quite expensive.

as i stated early, IF you do have a std, zithromax WILL be prescribed, so if you think you have some thing, and you oboviously do !! then i personally would cut out the middle man, sure you do not want to be taking antibotics willy nilly, let us now know how you go on! let this be a lesson in safer sex :o

There is no such thing as "the best antibiotic"in general terms.

Different organisms respond to different drugs.

And even among infections due to the same organism, some strains mnay be resistant to drugs that work for others.

Not all STDs are the same. Some will respond to Zithromax, some not.

As to the idea of routinely "popping" Zithromax one one's own, an excellent way to increase odds of developing drug resistance.

...besides that and on a more personal note, antibiotics are hard on your body and should only be used as a last resort; it's a common fallacy that antibiotics are not. Gut flora (to include your entire digestive tract from mouth to bottom) is one of the major defenses against disease, and is the first casualty in a round of antibiotic treatment. Gut flora exists mainly in your upper and lower intestines and provides additional benefit as the instrumental microbial life that continues the processing and digestion of your food, and even creates additional beneficial compounds for you to absorb - symbiotic life forms that we have been living with for as long as we have been a species, yet only now able to mistakenly kill off on a whim. Accordingly, one round of antibiotics not followed by a probiotic supplanting of the beneficial strains lost to the "Anti-Biotic" leaves your gut open and vulnerable to parasites, harmful bacteria, yeasts, and the like, and has been the focus of studies in diseases and syndromes previously thought unrelated. Fit or not, genetically predisposed to ulcers, IBS, constipation, skin conditions, mental problems, etc, or not, you're only tempting fate and common sense when you self-medicate for no good reason.

Preempting the "I've been an idiot for years and nothing bad has happened to me!?!" As far as you know...

And... nobody said being smart and doing the right thing was easy or always made sense but in the long run, typically pays off.

I hope this helps to change the minds of at least a few of you...
