Yes, you are all mostly correct, however buying your own modem means:

1. You are not committed to a contract term with TOT

2. You can purchase a wireless modem at around 1000 baht and then "share" your connection costs etc.

3. You can purchase a more powerful modem (speed) with better technology

D-link have an office on 3rd floor of dot.com and there are many suppliers there.
