We hear a lot on here how people appear quite paranoid about burglary so how do the figures stack up with say the u.k. or other western cities of a similar size, in the u.k last year it amounted to 12% of recorded crime, does anyone have the figures for thailand.

Thank you very much for the link tywais. My only concern is that it's main source of data is wikipedia, which is not really a ver credible source. Wikipedia is great for a lot of things, but stats is not one of it's strong suits. Even accounting for it not having the best data, the firearm murder stats are incredible, much higher than i thought they would be.

Could it be possible that the shootings in the south are counted in this statistic and thus inflating it disproportionately? If so then it might again be a little bit meaningless figure, i would certainly group the killings in the south as war/insurrection/terrorist killings and not group them together with regular crime.

You can dig the numbers out here > NationMaster

TywaisIdid look at their figures and was'nt too sure about the accuracy due to the figures from the south, but thanks for the input.

Making a quick calculation of burglaries against total crimes and seems about 2.3%. Appears the information comes from quite a few sources, but again it's hard to determine how accurate they may be due to other variables such as unreported crimes or "hidden" crimes, etc.

Well Tywais the uk figures show .apprx 12% but like you said they are not going to be an exact figure,it just makes me wonder why the ex-pats fortify their homes when they don't in their respective countries with a far bigger burglary rate

That's because the murder by firearm stats on Nationmaster for Thailand are completely wrong. There are no statistics on with what weapon a murder is committed, only total numbers, which is roughly 5,000 per year. The gun murder statistic is an error, 20,000 is the total number of gun crimes per year, which can be anything including possession. The Thai police used to have yearly statistics on their website, not sure if they still do, but before it clearly showed in Thai that the 20k per year figure was not murder by firearm.

How many times do you think ppl report buglary ? I take it that in the UK like in Holland its mandatory because of insurance cover. In Thailand i doubt that many ppl have insurance and they also dont have much trust in the police. So what incentive do they have to report it.

I think that could explain the lower rate.

You could of course be absolutely right and the figures are wrong, neither of us know the exact figures, but if you read the posts, and there is another topic running on this subject then you will see that a lot of posters think burglary is so rife that they should never leave the house, that of course maybe the case in some areas but certainly everywhere the same goes for other countries.

I am certainly not advocating that people leave their properties unprotected, what I am asking is just how widespread the problem really is and thats why I posted, my own opinion for what its worth is that a poster coming on here telling others that his cook/maid/gardener/driver et al has a friend of her great grandmother whose daughter was robbed last week is of no use, lets hear from the expat victims or others on here and get a truer picture, no big deal.

Im just giving my personal opinion on the figures. Personally i have never had a problem with burglaries. Neither in Holland or in Thailand. I got a pair of dogs (not for that purpouse) and i have steel bars in front of all my windows and doors. So i dont worry about it actually.
