Re GSB...

the two easiest ones I'm aware of are:

1. the GSB ATM at Asoke BTS station... or

2. the GSB Branch and ATM on Suk Road at Soi 39, just directly opposite the Emporium shopping center, and just down the steps from the Phrom Phong BTS station.

There also is..

The GSB head office for BKK at 470 Phahonyothin Road, which I gather is on the main road between the BTS Ari and Saphan Kwai stations, I believe closer to Saphan Kwai.

There's also a Phra Kanong Branch at 1176 Sukhumvit Soi 48, which is one one closer into town from Soi 50, where the BTS O Nut and Tesco store are location. But I'm not sure how far up Soi 48 this location is.

There also are branches at 572 1/2 Soi Suan Plu, which I'd assume cannot be too far from the current Thai Immigration Bureau that many of us know and go to, and a Sathorn Branch at 1657/1-2 Sathorn Road, which can't be too far from a BTS Silom line stop, probably Saphan Taksin.

I just went to the same machine (same day) and was offered the charge. Which I declined.

Can anyone explain the difference?

You'd have to provide more details re HSBC and what kind of cards you and she are using...

There are U.S.-based HSBC accounts and cards, and Thailand-based (baht denominated) accounts and cards. I'd assume the Thailand based ones (meaning opened here in baht) would not get hit with the 150 baht fee because HSBC Thailand is part of the Thai Bankers Assn. On other hand, a U.S. based HSBC card such as mine own, I believe, would get hit with the fee by a UOB ATM.

FWIW, I just realized the ThinkNet MapMagic Map software for the PC has many, many layers including banks. You can choose just GSB and voila I can now see all the GSB branches, but not ATMs, in Bangkok.

Vagabond, sorry if I wasn't clear... I'm talking about the Schwab credit card... not a debit card...

I don't have any experience doing credit card cash advances in Thailand with that card...

But what I was trying to say was...

1. the credit card has no annual fee charged by Schwab.

2. the credit card has no foreign purchase surcharge added onto the amounts of your purchases here, unlike some others that ding you 1-3% extra because you're using a U.S. credit card outside the U.S.

and 3... of course, all purchases made with the card earn a straight 2% cash back rebate.

Loma, thanks for the "thanks"... and for the info on the software... I'm assuming that's NOT online at a web site, but rather, something you've purchased for your PC..

If you've got access to that, maybe you can post here a bit more detail about which of the GSB locations I've listed above might be the closest to the various BTS and/or MRT Stations...

Other than Phrom Phong and Phrakanong that I already detailed above, I think some others are close to mass transit stations... like the head office, maybe the one on Ratchadapisek Road, maybe Ladprao, maybe Sathorn Road... If you can visually map them, it should be easy to see which are close to what mass transit points....

I was questioning the use of the credit card to make purchases not a cash advance (expensive loan) which I would never do. I have not needed to use a CC over the past 2 years in Thailand but I am thinking of doing more traveling and most likely would purchase tickets online. I have a VISA PFCU CC and they have 1.25% rebate program but the exchange rate would include the foreign currency exchange rate fee which I assume is .84% just like a debit card (even though we know a number firms don't appear to pass this on to us, yeah ).

My question is whether the "no foreign use" fee you mentioned is the same as the foreign currency exchange rate fee?

I should note, GSB has more ATMs nationwide than they do branches...But their web site appears to entirely omit any reference to their ATM locations. And the standalone ATM at Asoke BTS that I've mentioned is one of the few for BKK that's been posted here (other than some in Pattaya)...

If anyone else has standalone GSB ATMs in relatively known, prominent locations, please do chime in with the locations. Now that UOB is gone, GSB become more of a primary resource...

But re Schwab, I just know..when I use it for purchases here in Thailand, I don't get an explicit surcharge, and the amount of the purchase done in baht gets converted to U.S. $ at a normal exchange rate... But whether they're exchanging at 33.7 or 34 right now, for example, I haven't used it enough to know. It's a relatively new card for me. I think it's at the full rate... But I can't bet my life on it at this point.

Yes, the ThinkNet MapMagic Map runs on a PC.

As far as branches go the one on Rama I looks to be in the RTP complex directly opposite Central World; there is also one on Rama I west of MBK, just steps down Banthad Thong Road; a branch at Victory Monument (northwest corner) Ratcha Withi Road; one on the north side of Sukhumvit between Asoke and Soi 23; the one near Phrom Phong; one on Sukhumvit (soi 48); one near Sam Yan MRT, one near Hua Lamphong (MRT/SRT).

Still would be nice to find some free-standing ATM’s. As I find them I’ll post details here.

The HSBC acct is in Hong Kong, but the card was (re)issued through the HSBC branch here in Thailand. It is not Thai Baht denomination, it is HK Dollars, so I was a little curious why there was no charge. The card clearly only has the different bank networks on it and no Visa or MC, ie, it's just an ATM card.

Again it was same branch, same locale, 4 hours difference.

Was there no effort to get these fees rolled back? One article in the Bangkok Post didn't seem like much...I take it no one in gov't is concerned...

FYI, I located this GSB branch and ATM in person yesterday, and it's not particularly convenient via mass transit...

It is at the corner of Soi 48 and Sukhumvit Road, but that location is just about half way between the On Nut and Phra Kanong BTS stations, just on the in-town side of the large khlong and elevated roadway between the two. It's a longish walk either from On Nut or Phra Kanong...

Sorry, but you're still not being quite clear...

Your GF was using a HK-based HSBC account (denom in HK dollars) with a HSBC card issued in Thailand, and she got no fee... That's interesting, in that an out-of-country (non-Thailand) HSBC account and card would be expected to get the 150 baht fee...

But...you went to the same UOB ATM...and tried to use what banks' account and what kind of card??

Re the other point, after the original BKK Post article, nothing further has ever been reported publicly in English as to any move, or the status thereof, of anything about reducing the 150 baht fee.

A couple more GSB updates....

1. Indeed. the GSB Branch and 24-hour ATM on Soi Suan Plu is almost directly opposite the current Immigration Bureau Office there (which is now due to move Oct. 1). Actually, it's just opposite the police station building that's next-door. So anyone who's ever gone to Suan Plu for immigration knows where that GSB Branch is.

2. Re the branch on Sathorn Road, I walked today from the Surasak BTS Station down Sathorn Road to the Lumpini MRT station and never saw any GSB Branch along that stretch of Sathorn... So I'm guessing, the branch must be somewhere between Surasak and the CP River....

3. Likewise, re Lomatopo's post, I later happened to walk Sukhumvit Road between Asoke and Phrom Phong BTS stations, and did not see any GSB branch along that stretch of the road. I've traveled that section many many times, and never seen any GSB Branch there on the main road.

Two possible explanations.. 1] There is a Government HOUSING Bank office in the general location Loma's post mentioned, so perhaps the software is mistaking those similar names. Or 2, along that segment of Suk Rd on the odd-numbered sois side, there's a tremendous amount of rebuilding going on, with planned new hotels and such underway...very slowly. So it's possible there may have been a GSB Branch there in the past, but I doubt now. Not any trademark sign of PINK to be found there now.

And an AEON update...

The AEON web site I believe says they have an ATM in the basement of Central Chidlom. I was there today...and had a chance to look for it. Went to the basement area mentioned on the AEON web site, and found a half dozen different ATMs there...but none for AEON.... I asked a nearby security guard, and he replied... mai mee (no have). Of course, they tend to answer that even when you're standing right next to what you're looking for. If anyone has actually seen/found an AEON ATM in Central Chidlom lately, please chime in.

Whilst may be "just an ATM card" the transaction would normally be processed via VISA or Mastercard and, as a foreign card should have attracted to 150 Baht fee. A card is not denominated in any currency - it is the currency of the host ATM that is dispensed with the debit converted back to the currency of the account holding bank. HSBC normally screw you on this.

I'm not from the UK, but it is my understanding that there are 2 different debit cards available from nationwide. One is a cirrus and the other is a visa debit card. Some people with the visa debit cards were trying to get cirrus debit cards because nationwide started charging visa fees to customers as of July (I think) of this year. But now that, as far as I know, there are no 150 baht fee free ATMs in Thailand that accept cirrus debit cards, I think those with the visa debit cards are content to stick with what they have.

Donx.... I believe the AEON machines, which do not charge the 150 baht fee, basically accept all kinds of normal cards, including those on the VISA and MC networks...

Some TV members, most if not all Brits with home accounts in GBP, continue to report being able to use their cards at Bank of Ayudhya ATMs without a fee... How that is...no one seems able to explain. So for the prior poster, it wouldn't hurt to at least give BofA a try, and see if he gets a fee warning on the ATM screen.

But, you are right that Government Savings Bank ATMs, which are the other no-fee alternative besides AEON, only accept VISA cards, and will not take MC network cards at all.

Then, of course, there are some U.S. banks that reimburse their customers, depending on their type of account, for all ATM fees or up to some $ amount per month. The best of those appear to be Schwab, E*Trade and Fidelity, which we already know do in fact reimburse the Thai 150 baht fees, as well as domestic U.S. ones.

I gotta believe some British bank somewhere has some similar feature/account perk like that... But if there is such a British bank/account, the Brits here aren't telling!

But now that, as far as I know, there are no 150 baht fee free ATMs in Thailand that accept cirrus debit cards, I think those with the visa debit cards are content to stick with what they have.
