How To Open Or Forward An Internet Port....

I've recently gotten into downloading torrents, which is beyond fantastic.

But my condo building doesn't like us doing it apparently. Now on my utorrents it's coming up that my ports aren't open, which seriously affects the download speed.

All I know is that it's wireless internet (linksys), I usually average a total DLspeed of around 40kb/s, which is now down to about 5 or 6 that the ports aren't open :o

Does anyone know how or what I can do???

Thanks.

If you can not access the router from your PC by i.e. 192.168.2.1 it is not possible.

Maybe some forum members come up with a solution. I personally can't see one in your case, except a chat with the condo manager.

Can't blame them, torrents soak up bandwidth on a shared connection. Really if you want to do serious downloading you should get your own connection.

The router might be a slight variant of the above ip address - you'll need to identify the make and model of router and look up it's default remote access ip address. Then you might be lucky and find that he hasn't changed the default admin user and password which can also be found through Google. If you are using Vista then the Network may show the router, it's model number and right-clicking on this will give you an option to View device webpage...

However, it's not your router, likely you signed some terms and conditions to get Internet access and if they catch you tinkering... :D:o

Yimmy, Hi. It's not always the fault of your router or connection. You are downloading a torrent file from another computer so it could be that their connection is the problem. Also you need to have the upload speed allocated to your torrent manager in relation to your download. It also depends on how many seeders and leechers there are to the file you are down loading. The popular torrents I can download in 30 40 minutes but others can take days. Check the settings on your download manage, I use Vuze, and try to pick the torrents with the most seeders :o

If they have banned p2p via the router, you can ask the sys admin (if they have one), otherwise what you are asking to do is illegal could cause you to end up in jail/a fine or both.

Please do not ask members of this forum to help you hack a router that belongs to someone else.

Are you reading the same post as the rest of us here as I cannot find any mention of asking how to go about hacking into a router or ANYTHING illegal?. Maybe he is also trafficking in stolen babies as well and we all have missed that. JEEZ the crap some people come out with. I suppose you have never watched a copied DVD or watched a hacked cable system. Self righteous people :o

Just to add my couple of cents worth. I use BitTorrent and though I can activate the ports and get little icon at the bottom to turn green, I've found that by enabling Upnp and not using the ports my speeds are about the same.

Enable Upnp stands for universal plug and play of sorts, it allow the software, U torrent for example to control port forwarding automatically within the router.

As a side note anyone having trouble forwarding a belkin router, this appears the only way to do it successfully.

Absolutely not true!

Without port-forwarding it will not be able for clients on the internet to initiate a connection to your computer, but your computer will still be able to connect to other torrent-hosts.

So the only drawback of not having a port forwarded, is that your computer will have to build up all connections. So it will only take longer to get connected to several seeds.

The port-forwarding will certainly not speed up the transfer!
