I have Bank of Asia since December 2001, came as a tourist on a 2 month visa 1 month previously..

They have internet banking, and only asked for my passport, no work permit or residence certificate.

I don't think there is anything to be gained by pursuing this topic any more.  It looks like dreetje just has to come here, go to a bank and ask to open an account.  Just bring the passport and don't mention being a tourist.  See what happens.  If one bank or branch will not cooperate, try another one.  If that doesn't work, then he can have his Thai wife open the account as he mentioned earlier.
