Hi Guys,

Will be travelling to BKK in a few weeks time. Been there 2 times now but only ever had 2 or 3 days max there so never been able to get a complete handle on the lay of the land. Always stayed down lower Sukhumvit..

Will be travelling with a mate who might not be a good candidate for the in your face bar seen. So I was woundering what Expat places there might be in and around lower Suk that has available ladies and is a little more subtle than the typical bars.

I have heard about Gullivers in Soi 5 can anyone give me an update on them?

I realsie you are probably paying some extra baht than the norm but that's ok as long as it is not over the top. I suppose what I am tring to achieve is easing my mate into this scene.

Appreciate any suggestions of Expat/Pubs type places, pubs and the like that might fit the bill there.

Cheers,

Gullivers in Sukhumvit Soi 5 and the Beer Garden in Soi 7 are both easy going, not in your face type of places. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of attractive "ladies" in both these places but they tend to be less aggressive than in some of the bars around Nana Plaza, Both bars have a good atmosphere but Gulliver is like a lot of large pubs back in the UK/USA with pool tables, large screen tv's etc. So he may feel more at home in there initialy.

Here's a link to Gullivers web site, see what you think!

Hope this is of some help.

How about going there on your own? Many friendly expats to just have a beer with?

Yes you could go there for just a beer, although if you want "friendly" and by that I take it you want conversation as well, some of the smaller bars are better. Most of them have a mix of local and visiting customers depending on what time of day you go. I like the Crossbar in Suhkumvit Soi 23 (Close to Soi Cowboy) Asoke BTS. It's a sports bar with english management (Brian) and friendly locals, alot of whom are also Thai Visa members.

Another bar with a warm welcome (and near to Gullivers) is Finnegans in Sukhumvit Soi 4 (close to Nana Plaza) Nana BTS. This one has an Irish theme and has Irish/Thai owners (Gerry and Harri) who will always make you feel at home, again a good mix of local and visiting customers.

There are many good ex-pat bars around the city it just depends which area you like to frequent, I like the two I've mentioned..check them out you may like them too!

I'll try and reply whilst keeping it within forum rules :o

Gulliver's is a bit like 'All Bar One" in the UK...But with pool tables and freelancers :D

Decent food.

Bush Garden is a "quieter" pool bar above the Thermae and below Ruamchitt plaza hotel, on Sukhumvit by Soi 15. A few TV's showing sport and background music. Some, but not all girls "work" after hours.

The Office and Mojo's in Soi 33 are more expensive places to watch any sporting event. The hostesses are expensive and available for "dates".

I think he'd probably like The Londoner on soi 33. Much better Than Gulliver's IMHO. Great food, drink and live music. Just a bar with no "dates" available from what I remember.

All the above cater to holiday makers, Thailand regular's and expats.

Witches Tavern has the odd live band. Definitely more of an expat/non-tourist place.

Longest established expat bar is Jools in Soi 4, not really a womanising place but good for an early doors/late afternoon session. Friendly crowd of regulars, good crack.

When you say 'freelancers' do you mena the 'ladies' do not work for the bar but are there to 'enjoy' the comopany and mayeb find a 'friend'? Does this also mean that there will be no bar fine to pay and if so do these 'friends' charge more?

I am not a stupid guy but very interested in this as when I lived in BKK my mate who worked there was always recommendinf these 'freelancers' but said they charges the earth for a little 'companionship'.

You are right... :D

No, they do not work for the bars thus there are no barfines. But if you wake up with all your possesions gone don't say I haven't told you! :o

This is dangerously close to breaking the forum rules so I'll leave it at that :D
