. . . He Gambled With His Life . . .

From The Nation today:

"Army Commander in Chief Gen Anupong Paochinda said Friday he gambled with his life if any red shirted protesters were killed during the army's crackdowns. "

And, ""The claims are totally unfounded. I could gamble with my life if there is any red shirted protesters killed during the army's crackdowns," he said."

The phrase ". . . he gambled with his life . . ." looks like a literal translation of some Thai phrase. Does anyone know what the original Thai is and how it might be more figuratively translated into English? I have looked in several on-line versions of Thai newspapers but have not yet been able to locate the quotation.

Thanks.

Thank you, Khun Yoot. Can you supply a better translation than that which was in The Nation? I am having difficulty understanding the concept.

How about, "I'll stake my life on it." "Stake" in this context is the same metaphor as a "gambling stake" in English.

Lexitron: เดิมพัน [V] bet; stake; gamble; wager

Syn. พนัน

Sample:เขาหน้ามืดถึงขั้นเดิมพันด้วยทรัพย์สินทั้งหมดที่มีอยู่

He became so giddy that he raised the stakes with everything he had.

What do you think?

Here's a quote from a Google search:

อนุพงษ์ เผ่าจินดา ลั่นเอาชีวิตเป็นเดิมพัน หากมีผู้เสียชีวิตจากเหตุทหารปราบปรามการก่อจลาจล ของกลุ่มม็อบเสื้อแดงจริง

link: sn.kapook.com/4976

My translation: Gen Anupong declares he'll 'stake his life on it' that there were in fact no fatalities from the army crackdown on redshirt rioters.
