Thirty teams from organizations, local government and communities took part in the local boat races event held at the river in Krabi town during April 17-19th. The event organized by the Krabi Municipality aimed at reviving and promoting Thai traditional rowing using unique, typical boats called ‘Reu Hua Tong’ which nowadays locals use to serve tourists. They competed for a trophy donated by HRH Princess Mahachakri Sirindhorn. The Krabi Mayor Keerasak Bhukawluan said he wanted to revive the local boat building industry as well as promote local tourism. Entries were in three different categories; 12 male rowers, 12 female rowers and boats of 12 male rowers in a public category.

Two passenger ferries caught fire near a pier in Krabi with estimated 30 million baht damage.

At around 2.30 am on Wednesday 22 April, Krabi Town Police Inspector was informed of a fire incident on two passenger ferries at Kong Kah pier in Krabi Municipality area. Both were moored at a pier with no passengers. Three fire engines were rushed to the scene, but their operation was limited by distance as the boats were about 15 metres away from the pier. It took fire fighters about 30 minutes to bring the flames under control, but both boats were burnt down and sank into the sea. Police reported that the boats belonged to Phi Phi Family Company Ltd. The boats were the 150 seat ‘Golden Beach’ and 299 seat ‘Paradise Cruise 2001’ which provided services between Krabi Town and Phi Phi Island. Nearby residents said they heard two loud blasts before seeing fire break out from the rear of ‘Golden Beach’ before it spread quickly to the ‘Paradise Cruise’, moored beside while a third boat managed to escape the accident effects. No casualties were reported as a boat keeper managed to jump off into the water and notified others. Police suspected that an electric short circuit caused the accident, but they await forensic examination. At least 30 million baht losses are estimated.

Krabi authority discussed measures to prevent marine accidents including fires, after two passenger ferries caught fire while moored at a pier last week.

Krabi Governor Siwa Sirisaowaluck on Friday called a meeting with related officials to step up measures to prevent or minimize risks of marine accidents or the loss of lives and property from any accidents. The governor called a meeting, following the moored passenger ferries catching fire which broke out early Wednesday morning at a pier in town. Stressing that the accident may have an impact on tourism, Mr. Siwa assigned the provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation office to work with local governments’ disaster prevention offices and Marine officials to map out clear measures and action plans. He required that the measures cover piers, watch networks and units to take action swiftly in case of any accident. This is another effort to restore tourists’ confidence and revive the tourism image on the Andaman coast.
