Just moved to bangkok.......living in a serviced apartment......the internet service to my room was recently suspended. I sometimes dowloand porn thumbnails. Is it illegal to downloand porn for personal use in Thailand? Do the service providers know that you are downloading porn? Does information about your activity get sent to the government authorities? Appreciate any feedback on this topic. Thanks

It's not illegal to own porn but it's illegal to sell it. If you have a lot, they could say you are distributing it. This is Thailand, so same rules as home don't apply - if they want to get you they will.

Your ISP will have a record of everything you have downloaded.

Does it get sent back to govt ? Who knows ?

Best thing is to use a proxy - check out www.primedius.com - then the ISP can't see where you are surfing...

If they cut you of, it can only be the condo themselves. Maybe they have a proxy server installed and keep a log of what sites you visited!

The internet providers can't keep track of what you surf, they probably can only keep their logs only a couple of days, or they would become extremely big files.

Anyway, I tought the government effectively blocked all "unsuitable" content???

This is a popular misconception.

ISP can and do log the sites you visit.

Yes it is a large file.

Whether they choose to do anything is another matter.

And for the paranoid ones, keep in mind that while they can automatically log the web sites your computer has accessed, they still don't get to log what physical person was using the computer at those times.

I think this is wrong info. If there is such case, police would investigate and don't go for the 'it was my friend behind the computer' routine.

As you get a IP address the moment you login, an IP could be linked to a login and a login to a particular member or telephone number.

Even if you're on a shared line in an apartment, it still can be traced to a room by ISP phone number.

If 2 or more people in the same apartment are connected, then it will be a little more difficult. Of course, this also applies to Internet Cafes.

ADSL is easier to trace because all connections come from a specific phone number.

But, in all fairness, the government blocks access to some sites which of course we won't think of drawing up on our screens .... All those other non-blocked sites ... go ahead. If we don't get a message, how would we know if it's indecent?

Yeah, accidental porn addict :o

How to do it right way

1. set firewall - Zone Alarm is the best, McAfee - the worst

2. install cheapest proxy switching soft - some will advice Stegano Internet Anon... - anything will work

3. Edivence Eliminator will wipe all (ALL) traces of your history

4. Disable ActiveX controls and Install on Demand

5. Install Off-line browser or some PicVampier or PxSeeker or so ... and enjoy watching pre-downloaded "accidental thumbnails" without download delays. BTW, you could go out while your PC pumping "accidental thumbs" :D

Keep pumping, man!

If thumbs are too much accidental we might have to discuss some encryption features and a bit of Interpol/KGB counterspies tactics.

If Thai ISPs were actually keeping an eye out for people downloading porn and cutting them off, they wouldn't have many customers left. ISPs do keep logs of logins for accounting purposes, but the vast majority do not keep any long-term logs of actual sites that you visit. It's just too much trouble, and not worth the resources required. Those that do keep logs don't waste their time sifting through them to see if you've been naughty. If there was indeed some misconduct at some site, you would simply get the logs from that site and compare it to the accounting logs at the ISP.

Since there isn't much information, I can only guess that the internet service that pantip gets is provided directly by the serviced apartment. My suggestion is to go directly to the managers of the apartment and ask them for the reason, since it might not be related to porn. No need to be embarassed, pretty much every adult male has acquired porn by some means or another.
