Thaksin Invests In Own Tsunami Warning System

SMS is the way to go. Its not perfect, but its modern, its Thaksin's own business line, he is au fait with the tech dialogue.

Its how people are notified in Hong Kong (so there's a peer group issue).

Air Raid sirens and loudspeakers on poles traversing the coast are too old-fashioned. (Albeit attractive nostalgia to those born in WW2 who spent childhood holidays at Butlins).

In any event. No tsunami warnings are EVER going to be issued, because the same fear-factor issues will always be there. They just have to have a swanky innovative 'system' that they can use for PR purposes to demonstrate  some proactivity.

you have obviously never heard a siren going off. Placed strategically on a roof top, out off sight, the sound will travel for miles.

I heard an air raid siren being tested once. It got everyone's attention on the site, one guy came out of a portable toilet with his pants around his ankles.

when was the last Tsunami in this part of the world? so the horse bolting statement could be close to it, it may not be needed ever once comissioned.

What about Other Disaster warning systems will they wait for those disasters to happen as well? Or what about just trying to reduce the road toll to a lower level over songkran?

This opens up a whole new subject - how much would it cost to fix all the other preventable deaths? There are traffic related deaths, HIV related deaths, other disease related deaths, natural disaster deaths, etc, etc. And then we get into "quality of life" issues - some illnesses you don't die from, but you suffer from a reduced quality of life, so how much should be spent preventing those illnesses?

We could start talking about it all here, and if there are lots of posts, I may move them to a new topic in the "Health" forum.

All opinions welcome!

It is not a surprise to me to read this.  My guess is the other countries don't trust Thailand to be able to put out warnings of any sort since the Thai people usually snub warnings for the most part, and are very much indeed slow to respond in any appropriate manner and of course the way politics play as of their roles in Thailand.

These other countries need to find someone whom they can trust that will issue a warning instead of going up some tree and use binocs to check if such is true or not. :D  By then it will be way too much too late. :o

A Tsunami wave basically travels underwater, and its speed is astonishing indeed!!!  For example say the wave starts outwards from Japan area towards the USA coastline.  That wave will reach USA within a few hours.  About  as fast as the Concorde jet.  Another way for you to see its speed as a miniature model.  Go to some small pond that is still.  Drop a stone at its middle, and then watch how fast that wave comes to you.  What you see at the top coming, the wave underneath it is way ahead of the visual wave.

With over 280,000 DEAD, the other countries don't want to have someone who will be dickering whether or not to issue out an alarm no matter how small the quake is. :D

My two cents worth

Daveyo

Mostly agree with you hear Dave - the early "science reports" in late December said the underwater wave travels around 600 mph - near as dammit Mach 1 - Concorde is nearer Mach 2 :D or was until grounded :D

As for the other countries turning down the offer from glorious leader - they probably expected Shin Corp to get the hardware and infrastructure contract and couldn't stomach the thought of that.

Thailand's corrupt politico-business regime is becoming recognised around the world and the real effects of that will probably be felt in 2 - 3 years time. (1997 take 2 ?)

2-3 years is about right.

More though because we're 75% through the business cycle at this point.

At that time, Thai Rak Thai will start squabbling as the next election looms,- there won't be much thieving time left.

Politiicans with business interests will be looking to ramp up everything in the next two years, then cash out.

Given this timing, this is why putting in place a tsumani warning that actually works is not hugely important to them. They just need one which looks good, and hopefully makes them a dollar in its implementation.

Now can aTsunami warning system mean more business for Shinsat- A satellite company owned by you know who?

Well..well...well ! Surprise surprise!

A good warning system does depend on a satellite system. :D

What better way to keep the bread buttered on both sides with the family, relatives, cronies, drivers and maids dripping in gold?

An independent body/council could shatter that dream.... :o

Sub the whole deal to Shincorp :D
