Using A Vpn That Does Not Go Through My Wireless Router

Hi I have been experimenting with using a VPN so I can watch some UK TV via BBC player. I have a wireless router plugged in. Can I also make a direct connection from my adsl phone socket to my PC bypassing the router so the VPN software will work? If yes how do I do that, I am not very computer literate!!! I have noticed when I use the VPN upload speeds go from 2600kps to 350kps which is not fast enough. I seem to have 3 sets of flashing double pc screens in my tool bar. One says local area connection, one says True platinum and a third (vpn one) says local area connection 3. But I think the only wired connection to my PC is from the router. HELP!!!

Thanks

To connect your PC to the ADSL, you need to have some form of ADSL modem, so no you can't just plug the PC into the phone socket. I doubt that you router is the problem though. What VPN are you using? How are you measuring your internet speed? I am wondering if you are measuring your VPN speed from the other end of the tunnel (in the UK?!). The VPN usually appears as a separate connection on your computer and can be managed separately, but of course it actually has to pass through your True ADSL connection. It's like an encrypted tunnel within your ADSL.

Hi daveb1, yes a VPN connection, be it OpenVPN or a regular PPTP connection will work without your router. Some people use a Linksys router and flash it with DD-WRT so they can have multiple PC's on one VPN connection. To do this you will need a router that works with DD-WRT ( http://www.dd-wrt.com for a approve hardware list) and you will need to "flash" the firmware. All this sounds complicated but it's not that bad.

I suggest http://www.strongvpn.com they have UK and USA IP's and very fast connectivity.

So just to conclude, the router has nothing to do with your VPN account. Actually sometimes it can cause it not to work if it's blocking GRE packets or a port 1723
