Foreign tourists begin to return to Phuket

PHUKET: -- Foreign tourists have begun to return to this resort island one month after the tsunami struck coastal areas of the southern Andaman provinces, according to a senior official of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Suvalai Pinpradub, Director of the TAT Southern Office: Region 4, said the tourism situation in Phuket had now begun to improve with more tourist arrivals and a gradual increase in hotel and resort occupancy.

Although the number of tourists would not be as much as before, she believed, it would continue to increase gradually.

She projected tourist arrivals would rise further this month with hotel occupancy likely to increase to 30-50% since there is a Chinese Lunar Year festival.

Normally, a large number of foreign and local tourists would travel to Phuket during the festival because grand events are held to celebrate the new Lunar Year.

Mrs. Suvalai disclosed the inbound flight schedule shows a group of Hong Kong tourists is set to arrive in the resort city today by a chartered Boeing 747-400 plane of the Orient Thai Airline.

A group of 160 tourists from Europe and Scandinavia will arrive in the province tomorrow by a chartered plane of Sweden’s Britannea Airline and another group of Korean tourists will come in by a chartered plane on February 3.

It is expected Chinese tourists would gradually travel to the province following the Chinese Lunar Year festival, she said.

The plane coming back from Pattaya today was full and the airport had quite a bit of activity. As soon as CNN stop presenting thier usual sensationlised crap, maybe Phuket will get back to normal a lot quicker.

How many times do we have to see the video footage? :o

Property developers in the region of Auschwitz perhaps angrily ask about how long tv companies will continue to make programmes about the holocaust, too.

Phuket will never get back to "normal", because "normal" has changed. Do you really think that people will forget about everything and drop their concerns the day after the news channels drop the story?

Two months ago, Phuket was a popular beach resort in South(ish) West Thailand, most famous for its stunning beaches.

Now, Phuket is a beach resort in South(ish) West Thailand, blighted by a recurring natural phenomena (which WILL reoccur at some time, who knows when), and most famous for the massive loss of life that took place on and around the Island in 2004.

Tourists will be back in droves and I honestly think Phuket will do better than before since the press bad/good - draws attention! If one good thing happens I hope the local economy booms.

I would agree with you, except for:

Recurring? :D < I would suggest it is now one of the safest places in the world. :D

How is it safe? We all now know that it lies dangerously close to an earthquake fault which has devastating power. The next quake could flatten the place.

Dangerously close to an earthquake fault ?

Stay away from California, Japan, Central America, New Zealand (very dangerous - there was a big one in Napier about 1930),

Best to stay way from coastlines alltogether.

Holiday in Alice Springs.

For all the talk about Phuket being safe, the damage is irrepreparable for many people. Those who had earmarked Thailand for a holiday, will have most certainly change their plans, especially if they have never been before. Why take risks, when the beautiful " medi" is only a couple of hours flight away. So diverse, safe and westernised.

one has to be realistic, why take a chance so soon after the very recent tragic events. It's a changing world, what with the ice caps melting, global warming. Is it just a coincidence the earthquake happened when it did, and could it happen again in the not too distant future?

I'm sorry for the people who have lost everything, and the businesses that are suffering, but you are lucky having the TRT party back in power, surely they will take care of their own, it's not right to persuade people to come and spend their well earned money in a place where the beach is corregated off.

No offence intended, but it's the truth.
