Koh Lanta Last 2 Weeks Of May

Featured Replies

I am thinking about extending my stay for 2 weeks and spending these in Koh Lanta. Just to unwind.

But how is the weather, has the rainy season already started?

And should I choose for the ferry or boat from Krabi?

Thanks!

PS any suggestion for a budget acco is also welcome.

Meeting fellow-travellers would be nice as well.

Hi Soulwy,

yes, winds have changed so expect some rain, but nice days too.

Not positive, but I think the ferries wind down their schedule about this time of year, but one of the travel stands in Ao Nang or wherever will be able to get you either the ferry or a van, no worries.

Bee bungalows is nice inexpensive accomodations on Lanta. Once you come to the main Saladan road from the ferry, left turn, about two KMs down on the right. They have a pretty prominent sign. Last year during low season it was 500thb right on the beach, 300thb a night for their other bungalows.

Why not try Phuket....the rainy 'low season' has officially been cancelled, according to recent news reports (and a handful of hopeful hoteliers!) :)

Geoff, I don't understand what you mean

Phuket...mmm... frown...

Hi Soulwy,

We left Lanta 2 weeks ago. Status then was as follows:

Ferry from Krabi had stopped running earlier (the day we came back from Bangkok unfortunatley). Minivans still going from bus station in Krabi. No problems with car ferries the day I left. Ao Nang ferry was running still, but not often due to weather, and expected to stop soon (when we left).

Dive boats were either cancelling going out all together or ending up at Bida and Phi Phi as even Koh Ha was unreachable due to big waves. Only 2 shops went out the last 3 days we were there, and all boats turned and came back each morning, although Lanta Diver hadn't come back in the last morning I was in so may have made it on their bigger boat. Most dive shops were going to close for at least 1 month.

We actually tried a shore dive on April 13th (yes Songkran) and that was the first day there was surf (although small) on the beaches. Enough swell etc to give us viz of less than half a metere.

There was a guy out windsurfing near Saladan after this day.

Most restuarants in Saladan were closed, or open lunch only. Catfish closed. The main road and the beaches had more still open, although very quiet.

Accomodation, if still open, should be cheap, as rates had plummeted since March. 500B will get you a really good place with aircon tv, hot water, fridge. May not even have to pay that much. A lot of places were closing though, so depends who has stayed open.

It was blissfully peaceful though. There was usually waves out past the point in Saladan in the mornings (and out at sea all day), but not much wind in town itself by mid morning. Beautiful wind and lightening between midnight and sunrise most mornings. Rained most afternoons. If it didn't rain was very hot, but otherwise quite cool if it did and the breeze picked up.

I hope you have a lovelly stay. I wish I was back home.

Redfish, after reading your post I am a bit worried about the weather and the fact places shut down because of the low season. Maybe Koh Lanta in May is not a good idea...

Hi Soulwy,

what are you after? Frankly, Redfish's post sounds excellent for me (but maybe not my business interests), peaceful days on the beach, pull in some where for a cold beer when it starts raining, nice!

If you need more action come to Phuket. Cheers, HB

Huggybear, my idea for these 2 weeks? Sleeping, eating, surfing online, sitting under a parasol at the beach, looking for shells, dreaming and daydreaming... Nothing more, nothing less.

Fellow forummers told me that the wind in May can be pretty strong, just as the waterstream. Pieces of wood in the water, rain...

not so appealing...

Soulwy I went to Lanta a couple of years ago the 1st two weeks of November, was quiet, most places open, crossing over and back Ok plus weather was great.

Am sure this time of year normal ferries are not working only Car Ferrys

Is a great place to visit if you want to chill out. You must go and visit the Old Town as well.

O.K., understood.

Your first part, yes, you would be fine in Lanta.

The second part regarding the weather & water, that's the Andaman Sea side this time of year, it's hit and miss. To completely avoid that, head for the gulf side.

Best regards,HB

Lanta for the next time, I decided to go to Prachuab Khiri Khan and I am surfing for a good accommodation (which is not that easy under 1000 baht)

Thanks to all for posting!
