Is Teaching English A Good Lifestyle Idea?

observer

Recommended Posts

Whinge, whinge, moan, moan, life's just terrible here, I only came for the bargirls, now I'm destitute and really ought to go back home to Bournemouth but I'm trapped in this Bangkok hellhole with lots of kiddy-fiddlers. Is that enough??

Yes, the pay is low teaching here, but no-one's forced to do it. Many teachers I know enjoy their jobs and enjoy being here. The big concern for the long-term is how to make it pay enough to maintain a reasonable lifestyle in the future. It's a matter for the individual: Ajarn, for example, seems to have sorted it out for himself. I'm working on an answer to it myself.

^ Yeah the minimum wages don't really apply to teachers!

But I think there is a base minimum wage though for private language schools to be able to obtain their teachers a WP? I know initially a few years ago I was down as earning 10K a month, but a few years later they (I assume the Labor Dept.) said it's not enough to justify a WP...so think the minimum now is around 30K.....but like most things here in lovely Thailand it depends on how much clout etc. your school has! So I don't dispute you can get a WP earning nit noi or even nowt!

Obviously opening poster is hoping that this thread will segue into some sort of "yes, you can obviously get better qualifications for teaching outside Thailand" thread. Well, duh. If wanted to get decent classes about my subject, that's where I'd go (and where I've already been).

However, TEFL is not the same as nuclear physics or calculus, and I'm sure that the training courses for it are more or less the same worldwide. Had some training in Japan awhile back- maybe one of these days I'll go in for one of the courses here in Thailand and see how it compares- I'm sure it'll be just fine here.

Bournemouth rocks- not.

I haven't met a falung teacher in Thailand yet that has said they enjoyed their job, or the conditions under which they work, or the salary that they receive, or the respect they get from their students and fellow educators.  :D

It makes one wonder as to their choice of profession and location.  :o

We have never met. But i enjoy my job very much.

Likewise, we've apparently never met, but I like my job, in spite of the difficulties. I've never heard of anybody having a perfect job. I don't have to work a lick, and I enjoy teaching English in Thailand, and so do many others.

Didn't Will Rogers say, "I never met a man who didn't like TEFL"?

Good evening,

Please read my user submission on www.stickmanbangkok.com at http://www.stickmanbangkok.com/Reader/reader1471.htm. I would appreciate stories from those with similar or differing experiences.

regards,

Terry

To Jockstar and PeaceBlondie,

True, we have never met.

And I am happy to hear that you enjoy your jobs. :D

My comments were based purely on personal experience here in Thailand... "I have never met..."

Maybe I will one day. :D

I enjoy reading your posts both on this topic and others. :o

BTW, I find it curious that the OP "Observer" has not replied to any of these posts.

Troll? :D

I haven't logged in for 3 days. Is it a crime?

Apparently there must be a rule which states that if you don't reply quickly enough, you will be banned!

It is view interesting to read non-teachers views about teachers. I'm not interested in the views of image-protecting teachers who don't want to read a thread criticising their choice in life. I want to know how I will be viewed by people I will meet in bars. I don't want to socialise and network with other teachers, rather people with different professions, as I see teaching as a short term way to open other doors. So it makes sense to prejudge how they might initially view me. I have now formed that judgement, and I am reconsidering the teaching route as a result of that. Many thanks.

OH, AND IT'S A GREAT TALE ON STICKMAN'S WEBSITE. IT SUMS UP HOW BLINKERED SOME PEOPLE CAN BE ABOUT THEIR FUTURE.

This last post is a riot mate! I'm rolling on the floor :D good stuff. "I want to know how I will be viewed by people I will meet in bars." Hahahahaha!!!! Sweeeetttt!!!! Of course only the most upstanding and highly cultured expat residents will be found in local Bangkok bars. Quite right, jez.

Obzerver, you are funner than a barrel of monkeys! :D

I don't know if ken's allowed to post a link or not, but there was this British teacher's website that he went on a few months back to "convince" them of the evils of TEFL in Thailand.... he was no more functional there than on any of the boards here, and the "real" teachers there also called him a creepy loser! heh heh heh

Prasert was the first name I think. And then Domunique, along with Mr Evilution (sp?), Wolfslayer, Thomas Harris (can't remember the nik he used with that one), Goolies (sp?) more recently, Linda, Sammy, Meth a something man on Stickman etc. He does try bless him.

He was a bit daft though as he's used Observer before!

Harry P. can be annoying but relatively harmless IMO! This chap is basically mental!

IJWT,

I'm pretty sure that cutting and pasting from TES (or is it TIS?) would be acceptable! It's more for a laugh than info per se!

<Sorry to have remove this. KK>

So, Thai Visa...the last refuge of Smeg eh? I don't forgive people who threaten to slit my throat that quickly. So I guess he'll have to preach to the converted on here, and judging from the responses everyone thinks he's a tosser here too.

Yeah get those TES quotes out they were hillarious.

I like Hazza, so I'm not getting involved. He didn't actually threaten bodily harm to anyone!

Does he know where you work mate?

Actually the most recent place he's registered was Ajarn. He's pretty much pinged here within one or two posts, I wish the same could be said for other sites (hint hint!) :o

By the way I never suggested that Harry hacked Ajarn as in got into the admin controls and deleted it, as you are right I can't prove it. Actually it could have been any idiot who knows how to use google and a text editor. What i can prove however is that after twisting my arm to allow the posting of html img tags he exploited a bug in this feature repeatedly which pretty much crippled the Virtual Pub for the night. I have these posts in the recycle bin for posterity, and I would be happy to give you access to these topics Ken, before you Murderate me again...(lol this is well funny, getting modded by Ken...must come here more often)

That was a bit nasty with the Muslims weren't it? Sorry I wasn't aware (bad Harry!).

And:

By the way I never suggested that Harry hacked Ajarn as in got into the admin controls and deleted it, as you are right I can't prove it.

Which is why you need to post clearly and in full, as otherwise comments can and will be misconstrued. Pedantic I know, but for the best!

Mate that's between you and Hazza and can be taken up on the Ajarn forum :o or in the hacking section of this forum (where ever it is) although as he's banned from here and Ajarn...maybe an e-mail exchange would be the way forward? I personally don't want to get involved (more than I have already) and don't really need it cluttering up the place in here. This is a high class establishment after all, a veritable gentleman's club of teaching :D

I didn't muderate you, I just edited a post is all. And I did apologise for doing so, and let you knew why right away. I'm sorry if it offends you in any way at all, I truly am! It was kind of against the rules though whether I totally agree with them or not! Again sorry mate! If you feel hard done by, by all means take it up with the other Mods, I'm sure they'd be willing to listen to your case!

Right then back on topic? Let's talk about PS2s! :D
