OpenDNS Servers Dead? Or Is Maxnet Blocking Them?

Featured Replies

Could not access the Internet just now - same symptoms as yesterday - reported here: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Internet-Die...ur-t263714.html

Narrowed the problem down to the OpenDNS servers by changing the DNS Servers back to Maxnet's own - everything started working agian.

Changed back to OpenDNS, it all stopped.

Now I'm working on Maxnet's own DNS servers again.

So what's happened to OpenDNS? :)

Well, the culprit might be Maxnet but I am not 100% convinced.

I don't face nor have ever faced problems with openDNS. My provider is CSloxinfo.

I suggest to raise this issue in the openDNS public forums or contact openDNS support.

I faced a similar issue in the past and received a lot of help and advise!

You can have up to something like five dns addy total. Use both ever other addy open max opan max. It should become transparent which is being used. If open is going down on you most often make its primary addy the second one, and max is the first. I v not seen any problem with open dns with tot so it does sound like a max issue.

I'm with TOT and having the same problem! No internet connection when using OpenDNS but comes back when using TOT's own DNS.

I think the problem lies with the fact that OpenDNS is based in the USA and at the moment speeds and connections to the USA seem either poor or non-existant. TOT's DNS is in Thailand so easy to connect to.

Chris

I'm on MaxNet and use Open DNS and haven't been experiencing any problems at all.

No problem here on CSLoxinfo yesterday or today with OpenDNS.

Although I did notice the US speeds were erratic yesterday.

Due to the heavy thunderstorm and rain in BKK on Sunday many providers faced bandwidth problems.

Since 3pm international bandwidth was "swinging" During heavy rain not only local international bandwidth drops.

Its the line provider which is to blame - i.g. connecting lines together with scotch tape says it all... I call it state of the art Thai engineering!

ah. Might explain why my VPN in the US and UK were pretty much hit or miss - Streaming from Hulu,Netflix and BBC iplayer was pretty intermittent. Actually not much better today. Which is strange as all week its been perfect.

I use StrongVPN.com and also Witopia.net.

I use StrongVPN.com and also Witopia.net.

Still working with Hulu? I bought some bandwidth from AlwaysVPN, but Hulu started blocking their IP addresses last week. I guess I need a VPN with a fixed IP address.

It nice to see they are making progress, thats looks much better then most. I like the ones where they don't bother using the pole anyore and let the wire on the ground. Now the poles around here are differant then that, nice neat and clean, but then they HAVE NO PHONE WIRES AT ALL! :)

What a load of <deleted>. Does this company just sit around and try to think of something new to block?

My connection was fine at 10-11AM this morn. Just got home at 5 to found that they're blocking it for me as well.

You can have up to something like five dns addy total...

Is it possible to add more than 2 addresses in Windoze XP?

I get only the usual 'Preferred' and 'Alternate' DNS Server address options when I enter them graphically - i.e. via the "Internet Protocol/Properties" window. But is there another way of doing it? A DOSsy way? :)

I suppose I could enter OpenDNS's main address as the 'Preferred' server and Maxnet's main address as the 'Alternate' server and get the best (?) of both worlds. :D

OpenDNS:

208.67.222.222 &

208.67.220.220

Maxnet:

203.121.130.39 &

203.121.130.42

check for opendns alternatives at http://wikileaks.org/wiki/Alternative_DNS, we'll see if they can block them all.

For those of you who are being blocked, please report here what plan you're on and the first octet of your IP address. I have MaxNet "Premier", my current IP address begins with 58. I'm located in Korat and have not noticed any blocking of OpenDNS servers.

(For those of you who are comfortable with the command line it might be interesting to see the results of a dig or nslookup query using an OpenDNS server. I posted one above.)

when you get to the box with space for two dns addy. look for the advanced button then you see a box with the two you have plus an add button just start loading a sorting they are used in order listed.

I have opendns as first 2 dns servers followed by the Maxnet ones. Doubt it ever uses the Macnet ones though...

nslookup on Thaivisa gives this:

Server: resolver1.opendns.com

Address: 208.67.222.222

Non-authoritative answer:

Name: thaivisa.com

Address: 203.174.85.146

Aliases: www.thaivisa.com

On Maxnet Premier, 58.147.xxx.xxx address range, but the dynamically assigned IP can be just as well in the 124.xxx.xxx.xxx range! Depends what is available at the time of booting up the router

So, I'm wondering if they're blocking OpenDNS for the Indy customers and not Premier?

Couple of month ago I had a similar problem and was seeking advise on this board.

A user (forget his name) posted a test which I have saved and like to share

Do a test if traffic to OpenDNS is blocked or filtered. No need to change settings.

Open a cmd box (start -> run -> cmd <enter>)

Type: nslookup <enter>

Type: server 208.67.222.222 <enter>

Type: www.hotmail.com <enter>

If traffic is not filtered or blocked, you should get an almost instant reply on your screen. If nothing seems to happen and you finally get an error message, it's probably filtered.

Example output of the commands above:

C:\>nslookup

> server 208.67.222.222

Default Server: resolver1.opendns.com

Address: 208.67.222.222

Server: resolver1.opendns.com

Address: 208.67.222.222

Non-authoritative answer:

Name: www.hotmail.aate.nsatc.net

Address: 67.72.4.94

Aliases: www.hotmail.com, www.hotmail.com.nsatc.net

My maxnet Indy account is 222.123.27.x - OpenDNS is blocked

My maxnet Biz account is 58.147.44.x - OpenDNS is still working. I can't reboot to see if i get a different IP, too many employees are online now.

....

Click the advanced button on the bottom of the tcp/ip properties page, right below the space where you enter dns servers manually. Theres a tab for DNS and on that page you can add a list of DNS servers

As I suspected. Wonder why.

Ta muchly! I know I've seen that page before but I simply forgot about it. Doh! :)

All 4 added now - OpenDNS's first, then Maxnet's.

My IP address begins with 222 and I'm on Maxnet Indy. OpenDNS was blocked for me only for a short time the other night (unless they do it at other times when I'm not using the PC).

Here's the nslookup report:
