Thaivisa Mobile Skin (new lo-fi version)

Surf Thaivisa with your mobile or PDA

We are happy to announce the birth of our new Mobile skin for Thaivisa Forum.

Point your mobile, iPhone, PDA or Android phone to http://m.thaivisa.com

and login with your username and password.

This is the first version of the Mobile skin, so please bear with us, and please report any bugs.

Your feedback is appreciated.

Cheers :)

On the iPod / iPhone the layout is not nice. Only the left half of the screen is used, rendering the text to an unreadable format.

There's a stylesheet available called IUI to render pages suitable for the iphone or ipod.

To make it work:

1. Detect the browser type.

The ipod has this signature: iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS n_n_n like Mac OS X;

The iphone has this signature: iPhone; U; CPU iPhone n_n_n like Mac OS X;

(n_n_n is the firmware version)

2. In case these signatures are found, include the stylesheet and javascript from IUI.

The actual content of the page can be provided with the usual scripts.

It looks great on the iPhone I've borrowed.

We are looking into a CSS issue and a possible content-type flake.

Looks ok on my N95. Would be good if the pinned topics had a different background colour so it's easier to skip down to the first topic. Also would be nice if the background colour of the topics alternated to make them easier to read.

Book-marked the mobile version on my phone as it's faster. Good job.

loads very fast on my HTC Touch with IE.

agree on the different background colour for the pinned topics.

The Font in m.thaivisa/forum is a bit too large. I switched to smallest font and it still displays quite large. The posts as such, however, are good readable on smallest font settings.

/edit: just realize that I cannot go to any of the subfora, like SME forum or Pattaya News Forum (not that I could be bothered about the latter...)

Indeed, sub forums are not accessible.

In IE mobile, fonts are big, when using opera mobile it reverts to an entire text version with normal sized fonts.

Biggest gripe I have is that you can't distinguish quoted text in a post.

A post with quoted text inside starts with:

QUOTE (username @ date of post, avatar, time of post) then followed by the quoted text in the same font, and at the end of the quoted test it just goes seamlessly into the text of the actual new post.

As well the avatar doesn't show, it's just a big square with a little red cross in it...

The avatars only shows up inside posts with quoted text...

Just tried it with my HP iPaq PocketPC. Using IE seems not enough real estate even at smallest font settings - but that's IE mobile. However using Opera Mobile, it looks very good and load times are fast even with images, usually 1 to 2 seconds for page load. First picture below using IE, 2nd using Opera.

Looks great using IE on HTC TyTN, apart from the quotes. Quotes desperately need border of sorts as there's absolutely no way to tell where they end.

Just tried it on my Sony Ericsson k790i running Opera Mini and the results are pretty good. Since the phone is connected via EDGE connection the speed is slower but still quite usable. And monty's comment about the quotes, same here - doesn't enclose them properly.

Another glitch is that every forum only shows 20 topics or so, with no link to subsequent pages showing older topics. Within a topic you get all posts spread over how many pages it takes. Bottom of each page has navigation links to previous and next pages. Posted from htc diamond using opera mobile on ais gprs. Pretty fast and spiffy :)

Looks good on T-mobile G1(android) portrait mode - it does not scale in landscape mode.

Thanks for the feedback. I hope we we will get a new version with these bugs fixed within a few days.

:)

A few things missing to make this 100% usable to me:

* Forum jump combo (or an alternative) at the bottom of the page.

* Go to first unread link per topic. Right now I have to open a topic, then find the link that takes me to the last page.

* View new posts link - not so important, but very nice to have.

Right now the quote issue makes each topic borderline unreadable.

Any way I can have a crack at modifying the skin myself?
