MFA orders investigation into Thaksin’s Montenegrin passport

BANGKOK, 12 May 2009 (NNT) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has instructed the Thai Embassy in Budapest, Hungary, to investigate claims that the Republic of Montenegro has issued a passport to the fugitive former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Responding to news that the government of Montenegro had issued a passport to Thaksin, a fugitive wanted by the Thai government, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Panich Vikitsreth stated that he had been tasked by Minister of Foreign Affairs Kasit Piromya to take charge of the investigation into the matter.

Mr. Panich added that the diplomatic ties between Thailand and the Southeast-European nation of Montenegro only began in 2007 and no embassies had yet been established. Therefore, he said the Thai government needed assistance from the Thai Ambassador to Budapest, Hungary, in probing whether such information on the passport issuance was based on facts.

As for news that Thaksin was looking to purchase a private island in Montenegro, the Vice Minister admitted that the fugitive was entitled to such action, but affirmed that the Foreign Ministry was exercising all of its international relations to acquire information pertaining to Thaksin’s movements in order to bring him back for legal processing.

Looks to be sinking to me - so good luck is all I can say.

Does anyone else have the words "launch ramp" buzzing around in their heads at the sight of this? Does it 'happen' to line up with Thailand? Whatever happened to that super cannon Saddam was building? EMWTK!

Info sought on Thaksin's Montenegro passport

Fugitive ex-PM reportedly bidding for near billion-baht island in east European state

The Foreign Ministry yesterday sought information about a Montenegro passport held by fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra after a news report that he is bidding to buy a mortgaged island, which is also known as Hawaii, in Montenegro.

The ministry instructed the Thai embassy in Budapest to check the news report, Vice Foreign Minister Panich Vikitsreth said. No further information beyond media reports have been sent back to Bangkok so far.

Thailand established diplomatic relations with Montenegro in 2007, but does not have an embassy there. The embassy in Budapest takes care of affairs in Montenegro while Montenegro transacts business in Thailand through its Beijing embassy.

The media in Montenegro reported that Thaksin is interested in purchasing a part of Sveti Nikola Island near the coastal town of Budva at the initial price of 21 million Euros (992 Million Baht).

Sveti Nikola, also known as Hawaii, is located less than a kilometre away from Budva and it has three sandy beaches spreading over 840 metres, according to Visit-Montenegro online.

Among potential buyers were some Englishmen, Russians, Belgians and Arabs, with Thaksin Shinawatra - who has a Montenegrin passport - also in the race, the media reported.

"It is still not known where [Thaksin] Shinawatra got a Montenegrin passport from," the online report said.

At the first auction launched a couple of months ago, the Hawaii was offered at price of 28 million Euros.

The land, covering an area of more than 37,000 square metres has been offered for sale together with the existing facilities.

The public auction is scheduled for May 23 at the premises of the bank in Budva. The owner of the island is Serbian businessman Stanko Subotic, who is indebted to the bank.

Subotic purchased the most beautiful part of the island in 2007 from Nenad Djordjevic for over 20 million Euros.

After the purchase, Subotic announced big investment plans, which included connecting the island with the mainland, building hotels, villas, marina, and additional facilities. But he was prevented from carrying out his plans after Serbia declared him a wanted person on suspicion of being involved in cigarette smuggling and thus causing damage to the country.

Thaksin has got excellent business sense, he will probably be able to sell it in a few years time for double the price.

In the meantime it would be a nice part of the world for him to sit back and relax, make his phone ins from his beach side resort .

Fugitive eyes Balkan Hawaii

The Foreign Ministry is seeking clarification from the government of Montenegro of reports that it has issued former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra with a passport.

The Thai Embassy in Bulgaria has been ordered to contact the Montenegrin government for confirmation, assistant to the foreign minister Panich Vikitsreth said yesterday. Thailand established diplomatic ties with the Balkan state in 2007. It uses the embassy in Bulgaria as its contact point.

Noppadon Pattama, Thaksin's former legal adviser, said Thaksin was interested in developing property on the island. But Thaksin had not yet finalised any deals with businessmen who owned property on the island, he said.

Buried in the earlier post:

"In response to news that Thaksin had obtained a Montenegrin passport, Managing Director of the Network for Affirmation of the Non-governmental Sector, Vanja Calovic, contacted the Transparency International Organization to protest against the move.

European NGOs have demanded that Montenegro's interior ministry reveal the details of the issuance of the passport as well as Thaksin's qualifications for receiving it.

They claim he is not eligible for a Montenegrin passport because he does not have Montenegrin citizenship."

>>>

Looks like Nicaragua has lost their special ambassador, I wonder if similar objections by their MP regarding legality of Thaksin's passport played any role there. In both cases the President can apparently order to print a book with Thaksin's picture in it, but has no authority to grant citizenship, and no citizenhip - no passport.

Whether it's stoking NGO's to protest to their government or a different government's opposition party to raise hel_l with a government as per below post... it's quickly becoming evident that wherever he goes and whatever he touches, Thaksin generates turmoil... He's truly tainted and spreads his manure with every footstep.

Add Montenegro to the Nicaragua, Thailand, Cambodia, et al list....

Thaksin running out of hiding places

As former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra travels around the world, international police are preparing arrest warrants against him, reported The Age.

Nicaraguan Opposition Questions Thaksin's Passport

The Nicaraguan opposition party warned its President that issuing a diplomatic passport to Thai fugitive former PM, Thaksin Shinawatra, may be against the country's laws. Meanwhile, the Vice President of Nicaragua denies any prior knowledge of the issue.

The Nicaraguan opposition party warned the Nicaraguan government, after it authorized a diplomatic passport for fugitive former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra, that his position did not warrant this accreditation, even if there are plans to appoint him to be an investment consultant to the country.

A report in the Nicaraguan press revealed that Vice President Jaime Morales, who is responsible for overseas investor relations, does not have a close relationship with Thaksin. However, Thaksin has been appointed as a special ambassador of Nicaragua.

The report said that the Nicaraguan government, led by President Daniel Ortega, remains quiet about this issue, fearful that it could be lead to a conflict between the two countries.

Montenegro has established diplomatic relations with Thailand only 2 years ago.

It looks to me both countries don't even have embassies established because the

Thai government has to go through Bulgarian diplomatic channels. So why a country like

Montenegro want to bring the early relationship in danger for a Mr. T?

I've got the feeling this "Montenegro Island & Passport story" could be a fabricated rumor with the

intention to set the hunters on the wrong track...

remember - till these days Elvis has been sighted all over the world...

Actually, when looking at them all together..... it's possible that with different lighting situations, that they all of the same suit... :)

the tie certainly looks very similar in all of them... :D

the only thing that clearly changes is his shirt in them...

3 years and he's still limited to 1 suit and 1 tie? :D

Good grief, I thought Thaksin was supposed to pay well. This is his lawyer and advisor and personal spokesman and he's subsisting on slave wages for a fully-trained Western-educated attorney.

I support a Labor Ministry investigation into this injustice.

A 'wye' is Thai and we don't do that in England. We shake hands. In Thailand I wye people, in England i shake hands. Respect other people's culture. No player in the premier league salutes the chairman on the football pitch before a game. Whether it be by 'wying' or dancing a jig. (unless you feel the need to do so out of respect)

You're 100% right - Wying is just like shaking hands or any other type of greeting. But at the end of the day, it's a mark of respect, and if you've never been to Thailand it would be completely alien to you.

That's why the Montenegro island he is alleged to be bidding for is known locally as Ha! Wai?

Actually it's a brilliant idea by Thaksin- buy the island and declare it the sovereign nation of Thaksinland. Then he can issue all the passports he wants to all the PTP MPs here. He will then ask all the red shirts to move over there so that they will benefit from his wealth and there will be no more poverty anymore and he can rule over them as their president/emperor/god, etc.

Since Montenegro is currently trying to negotiate Fast Track entry into the EU (ahead of Serbia and some other neighbours) this little episode might just be an embarassment to them......

He does not have excellent business sense. He's willing to pay nearly a billion baht for the lower part of rock that sits 1 Km over water from a town that no one has heard of, in a country that's not really a country. It's extremely doubtful there's any fresh water there, so all water will have to be shipped over. There was a report earlier that locals enjoyed going to visit the little beaches there. Will big shot Thaksin allow locals to continue to come and picnic on his 26,810 baht per sq.M property? Doubtful. Every Thai who has ever owned property does one thing sooner than anything else: builds a fence or wall around it.

When Thaksin was the biggest shot in Thailand, he bolstered the decree that farang could never own land here. How different for him now, that he prances around the globe - going to various countries that allow him to own property.

He's like a cheap floozy, making promises to every tin pot banana republic he visits: Nicaragua, Liberia, Montenegro ....who's next to get sucked in to the charm of Thaksin flashing his fat wallet, grinning widely, and promising each honcho in turn, that they're the one dearest to his heart.
