May 12, 200917 yr Hi all. Could somebody please translate my family name? Chafer (its pronounced chayfer, and the 'ch' is not pronounced 'sh' like many people say it.) Thank you.
May 14, 200917 yr Author Thank you very much. Ive just compared this to a translation i got a long time ago and it doesnt have the last charachter that you have written. Im not doubting you but just wondered if there could be a reason why the other translation is different?? How would it read without that last character? I want to be sure as it will be part of a tattoo! Thanks again.
May 15, 200917 yr The last character is the 'r' from Chafer -- but it has a mark over it that makes it silent. Thai doesn't have the 'r' sound at the end of words like that, but it's common practice to use silent letters in words that come from other languages, as a way of indicating the original spelling, as well as indicating foreign origin. If the final silent 'r' is the only part that is different from the version you have, then you were probably given a phonetic spelling. The way I've done it is the way it would most likely be spelled in actual written use.
