Hey

I am gonna have a tattoo and want this sentence in thai:

Your life is an open book

Dont close it before its done

I found a page where it did say:

ของชีวิตเปิดหนังสือ

อย่าปิดโปรแกรมดังกล่าวก่อนที่จะดำเนินการของ

But i am not quite 100 % sure if this is correct. Could anyone help me?

:)

Don't use that, ok? It must be yet another Google translate effort, given that it tries to add unrelated words in the second sentence (which indicates a statistical method has been used).

If I back translate it, it becomes:

Of life open book

Don't open the aforementioned program before you have proceeded of

I am not up to the task I'm afraid, but I've given it a shot anyway.

You'd best wait for a native Thai to help out though.

ชีวิตของคนเราเป็นเช่นหนังสือที่เปิดไว้

ไม่ควรปิดก่อนที่จะเสร็จสิ้น

Sheba86, Metallica fans, unite, eh? :) "Mama said"

My version would be:

ชีวิตคนเราประหนึ่งดังหนังสือ เล่มอันเปิดไว้

อย่าเพิ่งปิด จนกว่าอันได้ึถึงหน้าสุดท้่าย

I couldn't resist a comment; tatoos are permanent, does this make sense in English?

I understand that 'open book' as in: 'His life was an open book', suggests transparency honesty or similar quality. This can not be the meaning here.

If in this case 'life' is defined as an 'open book' then when it is 'done' you are dead! So the tatoo would mean 'don't commit suicide! Not a bad mantra but hardly worth a tatoo, but then I am a differnent generation.

I agree, you need a native speaker but first he has to understand the meaning.

Eh, the lines are quotes from Metallica's song "Mama Said" off "Load" album. So doing a tattoo like this makes perfect sense to a die-hard fan, that's what I tried to find out with Sheba86 :D

As for grammar and style, this is strictly on James Hetfield's karmic load, if you know what I mean :)

I don't know what you mean but at least I have an idea why it doesn't make sense now. Good luck, all you need to do is wait for the translation for the diehard Thai fans.

Yes its from Metallicas "Mama said" and i think it make perfect sense about how to life your life. Your life is like a big adventure that wont end before you are dead. And you should life it as best as you can :D

Ok, have been working on this a bit and i believe this is better?

I still do want this in thai though, since its such a beautiful language and the quote is perfect as well ..:D

don't go out and get your tattoo though. the first line still doesn't flow. and the second is understandable but not good enough.

ชีวิดคนเปรียบดั่งหนังสือที่ถูกเปิด

หย่าด่วนปิด ก่อนอ่านถึงหน้าสุดท้าย

still this doesn't flow that well. needs some refinement. You could try swapping หน้า with บท. หน้า means page. บท means chapter. But บท sounds better in this second line.

Dont close it before its done - อย่าด่วนปิดจนกว่าจะได้อ่านมันจบ

IMHO,

I think tattoo should have an essence of poetic, and direct to general public not the person who immidiately reads it. No need for YOU in the Thai sentences.

ชีวิตนั้นหรือ แท้จริงคือหนังสือเล่มหนา

อย่าเพิ่งด่วนปิดจนกว่า ท่านได้อ่านหน้าสุดท้าย

What is a life but a kind of thick book

Don't close it before you read the last page.
