The Word from a friend at the U.S. Embassy is that the approval rate for NIVs in Bangkok is "well over 80%."

I thought it was more like over 90%, but guess not. Still pretty good odds IF the applicant has a good case, like strong ties to Thailand.

NIV includes fiance visas, which are almost always granted, so that statistic isn't too helpful for tourist visas- which are the main concern of most thaivisa members i think.

I would be interesting to see numbers for spouses and girl friends of US citizens. I would guess that would be a much lower number (less than 50% IMO).

Another problem is that it includes business , students, Thai diplomatic or official passport holders and etc that are given visas.

Have faith, I'd bet a Singha or three that it's a lot better than 50%. Doubt, tho, that the NIV section keeps stats in that much detail.

As we know, it all depends on the individual case, ties to Thailand.

I have told one American friend, also from Oregon, that his girl friend's odds for an NIV right now are about 50-50, if that. They've been together here now for about three months and he's heading back to Oregon. She's applying for an NIV soon. Their thought is to spend the nice, usually, summer in Oregon then return to BKK in the fall when he'll apply for a "retirement" extension of a Thai Non-O visa, which is what I've been on for the last 11 years.

I said 50-50 for this run, but next year a much better chance since he'll have already established ties to Thailand by then, car, rental house/apartment, bank accounts, etc.

Then there's the other kind. Met a guy at the Texas Lonestar some years back who was going to apply for a fiance K1 visa for his girl friend, found out about all the paperwork and time delays, so had her apply for a tourist visa then she'd just apply for an Adjustment of Status in the U.S. NIV rejected. He sort of expected that so went back to Plan A, which was accomplished in about 6 months, and they've lived happily ever after.

Had another good friend, retired here, former USG employee about GS-15 or 16, Thai wife on a 10-year NIV. Their last "vacation" to the U.S. she did the Adjustment of Status deal. AmCit now.

Above are just two examples of legal but "improper" use of the tourist visa category, which does tend to make the ConOffs suspicious.

My now wife went on three NIVs before we got married, first two short-termers, fine, third time a 10-year since she'd shown that she's a returner. On her 2nd 10-year NIV now, which was a wee bit more difficult than when she was a GF, not much, tho.

It doesn't affect to me now. I think my wife would have a 100% chance. She's an elected goverment employee now and I have an extension.

Unless both have strong ties to Thailand it is about 20% if you are married.

For a single couple with the man working in the states it probably is even less unless she can do it on her own.

Small world Mac, I'm also from Oregon :) . Summer's always nice unless you're in Astoria.

I plan on making a triumphant shockwave through thaivisa this fall when my gf hopefully will get a US tourist visa. We're both in mid twenties, both unemployed, and some other really big problems you can guess yourself... but I've managed to get her to Japan and now Canada tourist visas so when she returns from Victoria I figure it's time to make the gamble. I never thought she'd get this far, just a little bit farther...
