i'm planning to study at CMU starting in a couple months. currently living in china,

would like to mail most of my 'stuff' -- clothing, some books, and then bicycle to CM.

what are the procedures here? any tax or import duties?

i've read about an import tax, but this is a very old thread.

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Sending-Pack...and-t13451.html

and where can i mail to? do i send to the CM main post office general delivery

'poste restante.' do they know that's not a french restaurant?

It isn't? And there was I thinking it did a beef carpaccio to rival Chez Marco's :)

apparently the post office will hold packages for up to two weeks if addressed as follows:

YOUR NAME

Post Restante

Phra Singh Post Office

A. Muang, Chiang Mai Thailand, 50205

now, does anyone know if there are:

1) fees for holding the packages?

2) fees for import tax and/or duties?

3) fees because they can charge them and i can't have my stuff unless i pay them what they want or at least enough to give them the

satisfaction of getting some more cash money out of the stupid foreigner but still taking less than the exorbitant amount that they

originally wanted letting the foreigner off with paying them the equivalent of two months salary, good thing he didn't ask for a

receipt or they'd have jacked it back up to six months salary?

Of course there are fees for import duties.

It sounds to me from #3 above, that you are arriving with a very poor attitude. Perhaps you should stay in China.

1. Yes. I was aware that after 7 days a fee can be charged.

2. Yes. Not import tax, but customs duty will have to be paid.

3. Yes. If you are a "stupid foreigner" expect to pay. There is a large "Stupid Foreigner Tax".

sorry, humour/sarcasm apparently doesn't filter well through the internets.

i suspected there may be a holding fee after a certain number of days.

i've heard there may be import taxes or customs duties, but don't know how they'd be calculated on

personal items. what's the customs duty on used (but clean) socks and underwear?

and number three.....well, i've read loads of posts on this very forum, complaining about arbitrary

charges, bumped-up prices, tea money, corruption of all sorts. so my number three comment was

just a humuorous (i thought so at least) way of saying i get it, that i won't be too surprised if there's

a fee or fees charged that make no sense, that no one can really explain why i have to pay, or why

they're so high.

Well, cannot tell ya on how they do it, but I'm sure the socks are on the list. :)

I had a Flt Sim CH control throttle ( yoke ) sent over by my daughter. It's 6+ yrs old.

I had to pay 657 baht customs duty on it. Posted thru USPS/Thai post and marked as a "gift" on the customs form.

maybe there's a distinction between 'gifts' and other contents? or maybe higher as your

item could be considered 'electronics.' may i ask what was the approx value of your item?

looking at my most recent china post package mailing receipt, i have the following options:

................commercial sample, documents, gift, returned goods, and others.

don't know whether there are different customs calculations depending on which box is checked.

(there were no duties to be paid on packages shipped to the states marked gift)

and then the tax would be based on the claimed value of sox and underwear and jeans and shoes, etc.

if i claim a low value, then the customs duty should be fairly low, assuming they accept that my box

of used clothing is worth $10. only drawback is that if lost, insured value is $10. is an uninsured box

more likely to be raided? will someone run off with my undies leaving me, um, hanging?

i suppose i could just dump all my clothes here, buy new upon arrival, but that's assuming i can find

manly-man sized stuff. clothes here are mostly too small, too tight, max shoe size is 10.

if you're wondering why i don't just bring it all with me on the plane, i'm planning on cycling from

here to chiang mai, just carrying the minimum.

My daughter wrote on the customs declaration form " Yoke"

Thai customs wrote " Toy "

Value was 20 USD.

The box had not been opened.

You might just want to consider what you said 'bout dumping anything you don't want or need.

You can get anything you need here, and yes, you can get "manly" sizes here.

Good luck on your ride.

1) fees for holding the packages?

2) fees for import tax and/or duties?

3) fees because they can ?

packages have arrived from china, sent surface, took six weeks. four large boxes (55cmx38cmx40cm).

on customs form checked "other" and in notes line "for personal use"

and the answers are:

1) cost for holding the boxes was two baht each.

2) no import duties applied

3) mailroom guy was super-dooper helpful.
