nikster Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 (edited) I had been lead to believe that the CAT DSL service is the best, and TOT sucks. Seemed to be the forum consens for a long time. Now I just got two connections installed, a CAT consumer 4Mbit, and a TOT consumer 3Mbit. And you can imagine what happened: The CAT sucks for the most part, I get my 4Mbit only with a download manager, and "normal" things like web browsing are slow as molasses. The TOT on the other hand delivers 3Mbit for torrents and download managers, and is pretty fast for all other activities also. Leaps and bounds faster than CAT, that's for sure. So the new theory goes like this: Quality of a particular internet provider in Thailand is subject to dramatic changes at any given moment. One week this one's good, and this one's bad, the next it's the other way around. Best to keep all options open. I don't know about business lines, might switch my CAT to that to see if it improves things. It's almost 4 times the price, 3800 baht for the 4Mbit, and 1900 for 2. And the reason I chose consumer is that I figure if they deliver on their promises on the cheap lines, they are going to do so in their expensive offerings too, and vice versa, so I am a bit wary. BTW - example, I am on TOT 3Mbit at home right now, and it's downloading torrents at 300KB/s, _and_ I can browse the internet normally, seemingly without delay. Excellent stuff. At least for now Edited May 22, 2009 by nikster

At least for now Hi, To tell you the truth I don't know what package I have. Its just as well because its certainly not as advertized. I pay ToT 738 Baht a month, that's all I need to know because that is a valid number. Anything else (3, 5 10, 20 Mbps whatever) like the word "guaranteed" is fluff and hence meaningless. Until 2 days ago, for 738 TB, I had a Goldcyber acct. then Wednesday or Thursday morning my browser had a ToT page on it saying my acct. was "invalid". I contacted them and was told that I had been "upgraded to Platinumcyber at no extra cost" and only needed to access the router control panel and make the changes. Some alram bells went off then as I have lived here long enough to not really expect to get anything of value "at no extra cost". I reset the config. as instructed and things resumed. Gc was never a speeding bullet. The most I got from it was around 200 kb/s while downloading from file sharing sites in the middle of the night. 2 to 6 AM is the best time for me, by 10 AM it crawls. Since my "upgrade" the DA one click downloader that I attached to Firefox can barely reach 140. In the daytime I might get 50-60 with uTorrent BUT browsing simultaneously is like watching the paint dry on the walls. If I want to check my gmail acct., I need to stop uTorrent. Something tells me that I'd be wasting my time by asking for a free downgrade back to Gc. I'd be interested to hear from others who have had a "Platinumcyber" upgrade recently. DB
nikster Posted May 23, 2009 Author Posted May 23, 2009 (edited) PlatinumCyber is TOT's normal 3Mbit package. Costs 590/month. Works very well for me just now, see above. Check your line to see what kind of signal/noise ration you have - that's one thing that might go wrong. It might also be about how much new equipment they have installed vs how many customers they are serving in a given location. The DSL box they installed here is brand new and there must be hardly any users on it, I think that's why the line is so good now. Once they have it completely oversubscribed it will probably deteriorate.... I am using the modem TOT gave me, it seems to work better than my old LinkSys. Edited May 23, 2009 by nikster
monty Posted May 23, 2009 Posted May 23, 2009 Pretty much all comments regarding CAT on this board have been made by people using the business package. The very few I know using the consumer package agree it's not better then any of the other ISP's...
rak sa_ngop Posted May 23, 2009 Posted May 23, 2009 I think you have just proved the Schrödinger's CAT paradox.
