This page: http://www.budget.gov.au/2009-10/content/g...overview_08.htm confirms that the age requirement is increasing.

It will start phasing in in 2017. Over a six year period the age requirement will gradually creep up a few months at a time, until 2023 when the new age will be 67.

I am relieved now I don't think I will make it that long :)

Is this announcement really relevant to us Aussie expats who decide where we want to live after out retirement only to be deprived of the age pension by these cretins including the Howard government who say they govern for everyone but never deliver the goods especially for minority groups such as us. I like most of you lived, worked and paid big taxes in Australia for 60 years and only recently Ive lived in Thailand for the past 5 years, so for 92% of my life I lived in Australia, worked for the Department of Defence where I had a very responsible job where certain activities I performed were top security and now I find to qualify for the aged pension I must return to Australia for 2 years. As Ive stated several times in other forums, Australia is still the lucky country, that is if you migrate to Australia from a foreign country, you're under 50 yo's of age and you're not a male at least not an Aussie born male, the males in our age group get treated like sh!t from both sides of politics who swear they do everything to make our retirement days pleasureable ... utter bull sh!t.

If you are talking about the phasing in of the eligibility to age 67, yes, there is quite a bit of fuss going on at the moment. They (Government), are also talking in terms of not being able to access "Super" until much later also.

I think one of the problems of changing their ideas about the retirement age is that the opposition tends to agree that this needs to happen also.

What a lot of us are interested here in, is the eligibity for actually getting the pension if you choose not to live in Australia. Like Mason45 says above, if you have already left the great shores you have a big problem establishing your residency.

What I am interested in finding out and have asked on forums and at Centrelink, is if you leave Australia just prior to retirement, what do they class in terms of periods, are reasonable times for holidays or visiting relatives.

It seems there is no actual formula for this.

You are correct. The Ozzie govt has always been good at stealing from the rich and giving to those too lazy to get up and have a go or at least put in some effort.

You seem to come down very hard on the Howard govt, yet you fail to notice how much the elma fudd sorry, RUDD govt is stuffing things up over there?

I wouldnt get too worked up regarding the lifting of the retirement age in Oz, I'd say taxes will be the least of your worries by 2023, at which case none of it will even apply to you (based on assumption regarding your age). :)

But surely you checked with Centrelink or DVA the criteria for claiming the OAP if residing in a foreign country before you decided on the move.

You're right Mason45 !!

Americans evidently can receive their full pension in any country they choose to live, no questions asked!

The penny pinching Oz governments do not give a sh*t about minority groups like us!

I retired 2 years early at 63 because I could not do my job properly anymore.

Eyesight problems and nerve problems to name a few.

I moved to Thailand because I could not afford to live in Oz.

They were forcing me to pay child support to a mother who is a millionaire!

If I didn't pay they'd simply tell the bank to take it out of my account.

Do you call living in a one-room flat in Oz "living"? I don't ..

Now I'm faced with a 2 year stay in Oz to beg for a pension? No way!

They can stick their stupid rules where the sun don't shine!

True freedom of choice exists in Thailand but not in Oz.

neverdie, I think you got me wrong I was coming down on the current labour government and previous governments from both sides over the years. Australians are supposed to be lazy and non productive so we're told, if this is so then any wonder the way people are treated when they just want to live out the final quarter of their lives with just a little reward for the services that we as a working group provided the nation with through out our working lives. If I was a federal politician and got hammered in the members bar and fell off my push bike returning to my home and had a few scratches then I'd probablly get a $50,000 pay out for the stress I endured caused by this horrific self inflicted ordeal.

In Australia the age (retirement 65+) pension is determined by your time of residence in Australia, 25 years for a full pension and 10 years for a part pension.

Pensions are currently paid out of taxation revenue, individuals do not pay into a pension fund as in the USA. However superannuation is available to all individuals which one can draw on as an allocated pension and have the normal pension.

Pensions are subject to means testing which is fairly liberal.

Goverment Superannuation schemes are the best along with Industry funds.

Most people who apply for the retirement pension are domiciled in Australia at the time of application. You can claim your superannuation at age 55 at present but this may rise to 60

or 65 years in the future.

There are social security agreements between some countries, Thailand is not one of them.

Onlly partially true. Disability and Age pensions were once paid out of a pension fund. The Government wanted access to it so they agreed to pay pensions and took over the money.

I have to say I think you are missing the point a little. The goverment is not doing it because they want to penalise you, it is because they have to and any prudent goverment is doing the same, irrespective of policy and political standpoint. The problem arose 60-70 years ago when governments made up the old age pensions, but didn't fund for them. They made them pay as you go. Current taxpayers paid for existing pensioners. As western populations have got substancially older and there are less workers to pay for them, the situation is untenable. There are simply too few taxpayers to pay pensioners in the future. So delaying 2 years, means more taxpayers and less pensioners, reducing the burden. Unfortunately, many governments have known this for years but not wanted to make the unpopular decisions. It's a sorry state of affairs, but like private pensions, the longer you leave it to do anything about it, the worse it becomes.<br />
