coalminer Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 I've received a message that Comodo is stopping their free Firewall service and I should subscribe to their netserver instead. I dont like this kind of firewall and I'm looking for another "free" firewall provider. Does anyone knows of a good free firewall provider (Windows Malware, Spybot, etc...)

Does anyone knows of a good free firewall provider (Windows Malware, Spybot, etc...) Comodo confused me........never knew precisely what to do when prompted that there are files that need my attention. I have used OnlineArmor (not bad). But, after extensive use, I have to say PC Tools is the best out there.....free firewall, free antivirus, and also comes with something called Treatfire that compliments the antivirus/malware program.

Does anyone knows of a good free firewall provider (Windows Malware, Spybot, etc...) Are you sure it was about the firewall? They indeed informed they will stop BOClean from today or tomorrow on. Couldn't find anything on their site http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/ I suspect some phishing might be in progress If you are concerned write to Comodo or post in the user forum.
coalminer Posted May 26, 2009 Author Posted May 26, 2009 Are you sure it was about the firewall? They indeed informed they will stop BOClean from today or tomorrow on. Sorry for the confusion. The message was indeed about the services from "BOClean" stopping from today or tomorrow on.
coalminer Posted May 26, 2009 Author Posted May 26, 2009 Comodo confused me........never knew precisely what to do when prompted that there are files that need my attention. Same with me ... I have used OnlineArmor (not bad). I don't like "online" stuff. But, after extensive use, I have to say PC Tools is the best out there.....free firewall, free antivirus, and also comes with something called Treatfire that compliments the antivirus/malware program. I have the PC Tools packadge, but turned it off from some reason I have forgotten. Will install it again tomorrow. Do you have a link for "Treatfire"?

I had the same problem with Comodo. I ended up with ZoneAlarm and have been happy with it.

I got the same message about BOClean. Did download the required file but have not installed it since it is a combination of firewall and antivirus, also am not sure if it is freeware or trial ware. I also have AVG, Avast and Zonealarm running without problems so Comodo may not even be required. I'll just wait and see what happens after tomorrow. opalhort

Be aware Windows own firewall might be sufficient (basic) security for incoming threats but it lacks protection for outgoing traffic! The best information source on firewalls/security software is MATOUSEC http://www.matousec.com/ (guess its even the reference for most security companies)
opalhort Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 Just had a look at the official comodo website (http://comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) and found no mention of any discontinuation of their software. As webfact mentioned, it may well be a phishing attempt! opalhort
opalhort Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 if you have no firewall installed ............ I do have a firewall: ZoneAlarm which has served me very well over the years much better than Win XP FW. opalhort

It's a shame because I always liked BO Clean (apart from the stupid name). It definitely catches the odd thing that firewall/anti-virus stuff doesn't because of the way it works (the so called 'naked lady' approach). I don't want to install their integrated CIS thingy, so I guess it's goodbye to Comodo.

webfact Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 (edited) On install Comodo gives you the choice between only Firewall, Firewall + Anti Virus / Internet Security installation! You can choose You don't get the entire bloat automatically. Edited May 26, 2009 by webfact
MKAsok Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 On install Comodo gives you the choice between only Firewall, Firewall + Anti Virus / Internet Security installation! You can chooseYou don't get the entire bloat automatically. If only you could choose to just install the BO Clean component, just like you can now. But no. Now it's got to be 'integrated' somewhere into their new 'security suite.' Why don't they just leave the thing as it is? It's a surprisingly cheap trick on the part of Comodo, a company which, up until now, has been one of the more endearing in terms of not treating users of its software as brain-dead and not subscribing to the 'the internet is full of evil and only our live "expert" help can save you from the hel_l of certain identity theft' business model, but a quick look at their revamped Symantic-esque webpage gives a telling indication of the general direction they're now heading.

We should never forget and keep in mind we use a FREE product, not payware! So someday freeware will (can) become payware. This can happen with every FREE program. But it does not happen in the case of Comodo. They only stopped service/support for a FREE standalone program! BOclean seems to be integrated in the "Proactive Protection" which has nothing to do with the AV integrated (and not need to be installed). Personally I am using the paid version of Online Armor and on some machines Comodo. And I only trust these companies (due to security experiences...) Edited May 27, 2009 by webfact

Digitalbanana Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 I've been using sphinx-softwares Vista Firewall control since Vista came out and Comodo didn't have a Vista release. Never had a problem with it.

I'm not disputing you, it's just that the announcement in their forum clearly states: 'BOClean Anti-Malware board has been closed, and the product has also been discontinued as a stand a lone product. It WILL continue its development, but it will be continued with the totally re written, low on resources memory scanner and will be in CIS. BOClean is now included in Comodo Internet Security Suite, With updated technologies (New Memory Scanner) and is built into the Antivirus.
